SUMMARY:Séminaire: Laman Orujova (Univ. Barcelone)
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nLaman Orujova\nUniversité autonome de Barcelone\n \n“Inequality of opportunity and poverty in Portugal: what circumstances matter?”\n  \nPortugal is a Western European country with both a high level of inequality of opportunity and share of population in income poverty. This study aims to link these two issues and evaluate the role of inequality of opportunity in income poverty among the working-age population. Inequality of opportunity is assessed both in absolute and relative terms\, and at varying levels of income poverty threshold. It is also examined whether inequality of opportunity is lower among those in (full-time) work to assess the role of employment in reducing unfair inequalities. For this purpose\, 2019 wave of cross-sectional EU-SILC dataset on intergenerational transmission of disadvantages is employed. The results show that 1) inequality of opportunity is still high in Portugal; 2) the relationship between some circumstances and poverty status becomes weaker for those in work; and 3) individuals’ parental financial background is the largest contributor to inequality of opportunity.  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire: Masashige Hamano (Waseda Univ. Tokyo)
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nMasashige Hamano\nWaseda Univ. Tokyo \n  \n \nOptimal Monetary Policy\, Tariff Shocks and Exporter Dynamics\n \nAbstract:\nIn this paper\, we explore the response of optimal monetary policy to uncoordinated trade policies\, namely foreign tariff shocks. We provide a model of an open economy with heterogeneous firms and nominal rigidities where foreign tariff shocks induce a sluggish adjustment in the labor market between domestic and exporter firms\, giving an incentive for the monetary authority to intervene. We find that the dispersion of firm productivity determines the degree of the monetary policy response to external tariff shocks. We corroborate our theoretical findings by providing empirical evidence on the response of domestic monetary policy to foreign tariff shocks using data on Global Antidumping from the U.S.\n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n  \n  \n  \n
