In this article we present a model to integrate this phenomenon in the context of a general equilibrium dynamic economic set-up. The occurrence of pandemic episodes is modeled as Poissonian leaps in stochastic economic variables. The planner can intervene in two ways: first (prevention)\, by preserving a greater quantity of biodiversity\, and second (mitigation)\, through apartial blockage o f economic activity. The policy is evaluated using a social welfare function which takes into account risk aversion\, fluctuation aversion\, altruism towards future generations and discount of future utility.Biodiver sity conservation is shown to be more relevant for more « forward looking » societies  and societies with a high degree of altruism towards future generations. Societies accepting a large welfare loss to mitigate the pandemics are also  a more prevention\, not to have to incur the loss too often. Some of them are successful\, but most of them are not. The substantial differences in performance are explained by heterogeneity with regard to the goals that characterized these firms. Drawing from self-determination theory\, we propose a taxonomy of goals\, including profit\, dimensional growth and survival which are originated by extrinsic monetary\, extrinsic reputational and intrinsic motivations respectively. The study employs a mix method of analysis. The first qualitative part is based on 12 semi-structured interviews to academic spinoffs’ founder in order to assess how the motivation of academic scientists to start a business translates into organizational goals of their ventures. The second quantitative part analyses the difference in performance of 778 Italian academic spinoffs established by 59 Italian state universities from 2006 to 2015 according to their organizational goals. Results show that an extrinsic monetary motivation to establish academic spinoffs corresponds to a goal to realize profit\, proxied in return-on-assets; extrinsic reputation motivation corresponds to an organizational growth goal measured by employment growth; and intrinsic motivation corresponds to an organizational survival goal  easured by survival rate. We propose that  entrepreneurship will shift the scientist’s attention away from intra-disciplinary research questions and towards new bodies of knowledge relevant for downstream technology development. This will alter the individual’s search towards greater exploration\, leading them to work on topics outside their discipline. In turn\, the shift towards exploration will enhance the quality of the entrepreneurial scientist’s subsequent research as concepts and models from other bodies of knowledge are combined in novel ways\, resulting in more impactful work. Entrepreneurship leads to more impactful research\, mediated by exploration. Using panel data on the full population of researchers at a large research university\, we find support for this argument. The Frequency and Nature of Employee Mobility from MNEs »(Auteurs: Martin Andersson\, Davide Castellani\, Claudio Fassio\, Viroj Jienwatcharamongkhol)\nAbstract – Mobility of workers from multinational enterprises (MNEs) to other local firms is increasingly recognized as an important externality mechanism. But how frequent are such mobility patterns and what is their nature? Combining insights from international business theory and the strategic human capital literature we argue that MNE workers develop significant and highly valuable human capital which contributes to firm-specific advantages. Though\, these skills are not necessarily firm-specific\, but they can be transferred also to other organizations\, especially when the mobile employees were previously employed in managerial positions in the MNE and when there is a high degree of similarity or complementarity between organizations. Using longitudinal matched employer-employee data for Sweden with detailed information on individuals\, establishments and firms\, we find that workers employed in MNEs are indeed more likely to leave their employer\, compared to similar workers employed in non-MNEs with similar characteristics. This effect in mobility is particularly strong for high-wage workers and managers. Mohnen (University of Ottawa).\n\nIn this paper\, we use a unique historical event\, the creation of the early internet\, the ARPANET\, to unveil the mechanisms underlying knowledge production and innovation. ARPANET was introduced in 1969 and then connected many universities in the US. Initially conceived to share computing resources\, the core of the network traffic consisted of emails\, suggesting the network became a highway for communication. Tracking the publications of US universities\, we use an event study difference-in-difference analysis to draw causal evidence on the effect of accessing the network on knowledge production. We show that accessing the network substantially increased the productivity of researchers: with more publications\, publications in top journals\, and also more collaborations with other connected universities. The main driver of productivity growth\, however\, was not the facilitation of formal collaborations between institutions. Indeed\, additional collaborations accounts for only one tenth of the total increase in productivity. We further evidence that collaborations between connected universities did not span a longer distance. On the other hand\, the average age of references contained in the publications significantly decreased\, but only for references to the works of other connected institutions. We consider data from a large peer-to-peer lender that uses algorithms and no face-to-face interview to decide loan approval and conditions. Using data from 3.6 million loan applications and 817\,000 granted loans for 2016 and 2017\, we perform regressions of loan acceptance and loan conditions on the percentage of African Americans by 3-digit zip area. We observe evidence of discrimination in peer-to-peer lending. African Americans have a greater chance to have their loan applications rejected\, pay higher loan rates\, and obtain loans with shorter maturity. Notre communication souligne que John Dewey\, un des pragmatistes les plus influents\, a pensé ces transformations. Celles-ci sont analysées chez lui à partir de trois concepts clés : l’expérience\, la transaction et l’émotion. Il en découle une nouvelle piste de réflexion pour l’analyse économique\, en particulier dans le rôle que les émotions peuvent jouer dans les changements par rapport aux règles et aux habitudes de comportement. New Evidence from France »\, co-écrit avec Philippe Aghion\, Xavier Jaravel et Céline Antonin\nWe use comprehensive micro data in the French manufacturing sector between 1994 and 2015 to document the effects of automation technologies on employment\, wages\, prices and profits. Causal effects are estimated with event studies and a shift-share IV design leveraging pre-determined supply linkages and productivity shocks across foreign suppliers of industrial equipment. At all levels of analysis — plant\, firm\, and industry — the estimated impact of automation on employment is positive\, even for unskilled industrial workers. We also find that automation leads to higher profits\, lower consumer prices\, and higher sales. The estimated elasticity of employment to automation is 0.28\, compared with elasticities of 0.78 for profits\, -0.05 for prices\, and 0.37 for sales. Consistent with the importance of business-stealing across countries\, the industry-level employment response to automation is positive and significant only in industries that face international competition. These estimates can be accounted for in a simple monopolistic competition model: firms that automate more increase their profits but pass through some of the productivity gains to consumers\, inducing higher scale and higher employment. The results indicate that automation can increase labor demand and can generate productivity gains that are broadly shared across workers\, consumers and firm owners. We combine individual data on the strength of ethnic group identities with geo-localized information on the contours of ethnic homelands and on the time and place of mineral resources exploitation in up to 25 African countries surveyed by the Afrobarometer from 2005 to 2015. Our strategy exploits different dimensions of exposure to resources exploitation: time\, spatial proximity\, and ethnic proximity. We show that the strength of an ethnic group identity increases – relative to a national identity – during the exploitation of mineral resources in the homeland of that group. This result holds independently of the impact of resources on local economic conditions and conflicts. We then turn to the potential channels explaining this increase in ethnic identification\, by estimating the effect of resources exploitation in the ethnic homeland of an individual on that individual’s perceptions of relative deprivation\, economic conditions and trust in institutions. Mineral resources exploitation fosters feelings of economic deprivation\, despite having a marginally positive impact on real economic conditions. However this deprivation effect appears to be concentrated among groups without access to the national political power.
