Using the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Children\, I model the cognitive and socio-emotional skills production functions for children born in 1999–2000\, from 4 to 11 years old\, using\, among others\, a cumulative value-added and a generalized method of moments model. I find that the effect on children’s verbal and socio-emotional skills of time spent on educational activities with the father is smaller than that with the mother or both parents together. For socio-emotional skills\, this difference seems to be driven by fathers who spend little time with their children. Results are robust to several sensitivity checks.\n

We investigate the weights that politicians put on the revealed preferences of their constituents\, special interest groups and party when deciding on legislative proposals. Preferences of constituents\, special interest groups and parties are directly observed in our setting and they are positively correlated among each other. The empirical findings suggest that constituent preferences are assigned the lowest weight. Holding constant the preferences of other principals\, constituent preferences are assigned a weight of only 10.0%. Party preferences are assigned the highest weight of all principals and special interest groups lie in between. A politician’s personal ideology plays no substantial role in legislative decisions. We explore conflict among principals as well as heterogeneity among politicians. Our results cast doubt on the empirical relevance of the median voter model and suggest that more principals need to be considered to explain legislative decisions.\n\n\n

Pour gérer ces écosystèmes et pêcheries de manière plus durable\, plusieurs scientifiques et parties prenantes mettent en avant une gestion écosystémique des pêches. L’idée sous-jacente à cette approche est de prendre en compte différents niveaux de complexité\, incluant les interactions trophiques\, l’habitat et les interactions socio-économique. La pêche illégale est un enjeu important parmi ces complexités. Nous utilisons une démarche EBFM (Ecosystem Based Fishery Management) appliquée au cas de la petite pêcherie côtière guyanaise\, en prenant en compte le haut niveau de pêche illégale présent sur ce cas d’étude. Le modèle est calibré en utilisant des données de débarquements transmises par l’IFREMER et des données de pêche illégale. La calibration met en évidence l’impact important de la pêche illégale sur la dynamique de l’écosystème et des débarquements. Nos résultats mettent en avant les gains importants potentiels en termes de capture et profit\, dans l’hypothèse d’une suppression de la pêche illégale. DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\nAndrew Jackson\nUniversité de Surrey\n« A stock-flow consistent\, input-output framework for the study of energy transitions\, stranded assets and transition risk » \n \n\nLimiting global temperature increases to 2°C above pre-industrial levels will necessitate a transition away from fossil fuels and towards low carbon forms of energy production. While an energy transition is necessary to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change\, it is also likely to lead to the stranding of fossil fuel reserves and capital assets in the energy sector. A concern that is raised in the literature is that asset stranding will negatively affect both the market value of fossil fuel firms and their ability to repay their debts\, with any losses potentially negatively affecting other parts of the financial system and the rest of the economy. Although the stranded assets literature is relatively large and varied\, only a small number of papers have attempted to investigate the economic effects of stranded assets using an economic model. However\, rather than focusing on the financial impacts of asset stranding\, these papers tend to focus only on ‘real’ impacts. As such\, the modelling of the main mechanism by which stranding is hypothesised to affect the economy – i.e. via the financial markets – remains something of a gap in the literature. We aim to fill this gap by developing a stock-flow consistent (SFC) model with an integrated input-output (IO) model for the study of the economic and financial impacts of energy transitions\, capital asset stranding and transition risk. The model is that of a pure credit economy that consists of a household sector\, a banking sector\, and four firm sectors: a fossil fuel energy sector\, a renewable energy sector\, a capital goods sector and an ‘other’ firm sector that produces all the non-energy non-capital goods. Novel or semi-novel aspects of the model include multiple firm sectors and goods types\, the integration of an input-output model and an almost ideal demand system into the larger SFC model\, firms that produce distinct capital vintages which last for a given number of periods and that have endogenously determined levels of labour productivity and material goods inputs\, the endogenisation of firms’ markups based on target profit rates\, and the tracking of individual loans and loan repayments (with loan defaults that affect the bank’s capital position and so its lending rates). The model is used to investigate the different economic impacts of different types of transitions to a low carbon economy\, with the overall macroeconomic impacts depending on the technological differences between green and brown energy production (in terms of capital intensity\, energy requirements\,etc.)\,the speed of the energy transition\, the degree to which agents are able to anticipate the transition and interactions between the real and financial sides of the economy. \n\n\n \n>> en visio sur ZOOM : si vous souhaitez assister au séminaire\, écrivez à communication.gretha@u-bordeaux.fr

Les griefs portent le plus souvent sur leur portée éphémère ou leur légitimité\, mais ces plaintes sont rarement fondées sur une compréhension détaillée de leur fonctionnement\, ce qui limite considérablement leur analyse critique. Nous proposons de mobiliser le modèle de distance sociale d’Akerlof (1997) pour mieux comprendre l’efficacité des nudges informationnels. Nous montrons ainsi que les biais cognitifs implicites restent la principale source de performance\, ce qui nous amène à renouveler ces considérations éthiques. Physical and economic forces such as fragmentations and changing launch costs\, or policies like post-mission disposal (PMD) compliance requirements\, will alter the relative attractiveness of different orbits and lead operators to adjust their launch behaviors. However\, the determinants of launch behavior are understudied\, and integrating models of launch behavior with models of the debris environment remains an open challenge. We present a statistical framework for integrating predictive\, theoretically-grounded models of launch behavior with evolutionary models of the low-Earth orbit (LEO) environment. We implement this framework using data on satellite launches\, the orbital environment\, launch vehicle prices\, sectoral revenues\, and government budgets over 2006-2019. The data are combined with a multi-shell and multi-species Particle-in-a-Box model of the debris environment and a two-stage budgeting model of commercial\, civil government\, and military decisions to allocate new launches across orbital shells. We demonstrate the framework’s capabilities in three counterfactual scenarios: an unexpected fragmentation event in a highly-used region\, a decrease in the cost of accessing lower parts of LEO\, and increasing PMD compliance in a region with high collision risk. Evidence from Brazil\nAbstract: Nutritional status and educational performance are known to be closely linked. However\, although recent studies found that the age of primary school enrollment is a major driver of educational achievement and adult income\, its impacts on childhood health and nutrition remain largely unknown\, particularly in emerging countries where childhood stunting and overweight coexist. In Brazil\, children are supposed to enroll in primary school the year they turn six. Using a recent representative database of middle and high school students in Brazil based on a survey conducted in 2015\, I implement an instrumental variables strategy using exogenous variations in the students’ birthdate to isolate the impact of late enrollment in primary school (i.e. older than 6 when enrolled) on height-for-age and body mass-for-age indicators. Overall\, late enrollment has a protective effect against hazardous weight gain\, reducing the prevalence of overweight (-3 percentage points). However\, late-enrolled students from under-privileged families had lower height-for-age scores than their younger counterparts (-0.6 z-score unit). Transmission mechanisms are discussed and partially tested. The findings highlight the importance of providing free school meals for students from underprivileged families to reduce stunting\, while simultaneously countering negative school externalities such as bullying to fight the epidemic of childhood obesity. \nKey words: Brazil; schooling; childhood overweight; height-for-age; BMI-for-age. \n  \n\n\n> Pour assister au séminaire (zoom) contactez : communication.gretha@u-bordeaux.fr\n\n

Since the prevalence of ticks in European forest is trending up under the effects of climate change\, the risk of a bite during a forest recreational activity is increasing and raises public health concerns\, despite the heated debates on the actual severity of Lyme disease. Since the decision of forest users to engage in self-protection efforts is largely influenced by their information biases\, we explore the relevancy of information instruments such as local nudges and global beliefs alteration for an efficient prevention policy. To do so we build a theoretical model where individuals with heterogeneous perceptions on both the risk of a bite and the severity of the disease determine their optimal self-protection effort while the social planner resorts to local and national scale information instruments to reduce the welfare loss due to imperfect information.
