SUMMARY:Séminaire: Renaud Coulomb (Mines Paris - PSL Univ.)
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n \n \nRenaud Coulomb\n(Mines Paris – PSL University (CERNA)) \n  \n’Bad’ Oil\,’Worse’ Oil and Carbon Misallocation\nAbstract: Not all barrels of oil are created equal: their extraction varies in both private cost and carbon intensity. Using a rich micro-dataset on World oil fields and estimates of their carbon intensities and private extraction costs\, this paper quantifies the additional emissions and costs from having extracted the ’wrong’ deposits. We do so by comparing historical deposit-level supplies to counterfactuals that factor in pollution costs\, while keeping annual global consumption unchanged. Between 1992 and 2018\, carbon misallocation amounted to at least 11.00 GtCO2eq with an environmental cost evaluated at US$ 2.2 trillion (US$ 2018). This translates into a significant supply-side ecological debt for major producers of dirty oil. Looking towards the future\, we estimate the gains from making deposit-level extraction socially optimal at about 9.30 GtCO2eq evaluated at US$ 1.9 trillion (US$ 2018) along a future aggregate demand pathway coherent with the objective of net-zero emissions in 2050\, and document the very unequal distribution of the subsequent stranded oil reserves across countries. \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> Pour assister au séminaire via ZOOM\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \n\n\nDaniel Mirza\n(Université de Tours\, CEPII)\n  \n\nTerrorism\, Media Attitudes Towards Migration and Votes: Evidence from France\n \nRésumé: This article is interested in media attitudes towards migration\, in times of terrorism. We first study changes in media reportings on migration\, in terms of salience and tone. Second\, we assess by how much they matter in voting outcomes. We use natural language processing (NLP) methods to analyze French news articles about immigration before and after successive waves of terrorist attacks. We find that during 3 to 8 weeks after a significant attack\, a shift of around 30-50% in both the intensity and net negative tone of reporting about migration is clearly observed. These effects happen to be robust across French media political orientations. We also find that during a nationwide election in France that happens to take place\, incidently\, 3 weeks after the Bataclan November 13th attack\, votes in favor of the main anti-migrant party were higher in municipalities which were more exposed to media adopting negative tones.\n  \n\n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n
