The 1952 breakup of Germany’s leading chemical company\, IG Farben\, represents such a disruption. After the Second World War\, the Allies occupying Germany imposed the breakup because of IG Farben’s importance for the German war economy instead of standard antitrust concerns. In technology areas where the breakup reduced concentration\, patenting increased strongly\, driven by domestic firms unrelated to IG Farben. In contrast\, increases in product-level competition do not increase innovation\, and the extent to which product markets related to a technology were affected by the breakup is unrelated to the increase in innovation. Similarly\, neither the movement of IG Farben inventors nor an increased propensity to patent or duplication of research drive the effect. Descriptively\, IG Farben’s successors increased their patenting activities as well\, and their patenting specialized relative to the pre-breakup period. In an era of high financial integration\, we investigate the relationship between the real exchange rate and international reserves using nonlinear regressions and panel threshold regressions over 110 countries from 2001 to 2020. Our study shows the level of financial-institution development plays an essential role in explaining the buffer effect of international reserves. Countries with a low development of their financial institutions may manage the international reserves as a shield to deal with the negative consequences of terms-of-trade shocks on the real exchange rate. These visas\, which come with a renewable residence permit\, apply exclusively to immigrants from outside the European Union\, who do not enjoy of the European freedom of movement rights. This creates a quasi-experimental setting that we exploit to test whether the researcher visa affected positively the stay rate of non-EU PhD graduates\, relative to EU ones\, based on information we obtain from their post-doc scientific publications. We do not observe a significant increase in stay rates in the years immediately following graduation. Carbon pricing is often paired with compensation to carbon-intensive firms to mitigate carbon leakage risk. This paper examines the causal impacts of compensation payments for indirect carbon costs embodied in electricity prices. We use confidential UK administrative microdata to exploit firm-level inclusion criteria in both difference-in-differences and regression discontinuity frameworks. Our findings suggest that compensated firms increased production and electricity use relative to uncompensated firms\, with no significant effect on energy intensity. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nIsabelle Chort\n(Université de Bayonne) \nAgricultural policies and  biodiversity:  impact of the CAP greening on bird abundance and diversity in France\n(co-ecrit avec Aicha Hasnii et Berk Öktem) \n\nWe analyse the impact of the 2013 reform of the European Union Common Agricultural Policy on bird diversity in France. We match bird observations from the French Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) to parcel level information on agricultural land use and type of crops. We exploit the heterogeneous exposure of bird observation sites to the reform depending on their ex-ante extent of arable area in a continuous difference-in-differences approach. We find evidence of an increase in overall bird abundance after 2015 in sites with a higher ex-ante proportion of arable land\, driven by a small number of generalist species\, and no impact on species richness and phylogenetic diversity. A decomposition by diet type suggests that vertebrate eaters were positively impacted by the reform. By contrast\, cropland species experienced the most dramatic decline after 2015 in sites with a higher share of arable area. Using a novel geo-referenced database of French patents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Oÿce (1838-1960)\, we assess the influence of the Catholic Church’s anti-scientific stance. Our results show that a one standard deviation in-crease in religiosity corresponds to a 1.1 decline in electrical patents. Education does not appear to be the main factor\, but societal progressiveness partially explains these findings. Using newly introduced methods and specifications\, we find that investment sensitivity to real estate prices decreases with firm size: The smallest firms are at least three times more responsive to changes in collateral value compared to the largest firms. We impute these estimates onto other countries where available data lack firm-level detail. This approach allows us to assess the aggregate sensitivity of investment to real estate prices across different countries. The design includes a cash transfer pro- gram (T1)\, T1 plus animal transfer (T2) and T2 plus a nutrition- focused program (T3). We find that the program reduces extreme poverty in all treatment branches\, but only T3 positively impacts child nutrition and anthropometrics measures. Besides\, only the T3 branch impacts motor and cognitive development of new born children. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nSébastien Desbureaux\n(INRAE) \n  \nKeeping Gorillas in the Mist: The Environmental Economics of Accelerating the Adoption of Clean Cooking\n  \nAbstract: Wood fuel remains the main cooking fuel for one third of humanity\, with important negative consequences for forests\, wildlife\, and climate change. As access to electricity is steadily increasing\, our randomized control trial (n=1500) asks whether new generations of efficient cookers can be promoted\, studies the impact of adopting them\, and mechanisms to promote their adoption. The study takes place in the rapidly growing city of Goma\, Democratic Republic of the Congo\, where charcoal consumption threatens the protected habitats of thousands of species living in Virunga National Park\, including Mountain Gorillas. Our results show that fully subsidizing the initial purchase of an Electric Pressure Cooker (80$)  to the clients of an electricity providers leads to a triple win: $360 savings on cooking for households;  $115 extra earnings from electricity consumption for the electricity provider; 7.5tCO2eq reduced over the 5-year EPC life span per cooker;  and 1 ha of forest saved for each 29 cookers distributed. We further find that subsidizing electricity price and environmental messaging campaigns targeting users further increases usage of the cooker. Analysis includes several control variables to examine the influence at the company level. The research hypotheses are tested using a sample consisting of companies from Eastern European geographical area\, and non-financial industries. The analysed time frame is the period between 2022 and 2023. Regression models estimated for panel data\, using random-effects are applied. The findings draw a clear picture of the impact exerted by corporate governance mechanisms on impression management\, demonstrating that governance\, management and shareholders scores have a positive influence on the level of optimism\, while positive and negative words exposed in sustainability reporting are significantly influenced by management and CSR strategy scores. Results summary may have implications for business and academic environments. It employs a variational inequality approach within a multi-criteria decision-making framework. The theoretical findings are validated through numerical simulations using a neural network-based machine learning algorithm. They conclusively demonstrate the potential to not only achieve but also surpass objectives related to carbon and biodiversity neutrality targets. This study underscores the effectiveness of combining market valorisation of environmental services with government subsidies for ecological transitions as a powerful strategy to significantly reduce the global ecological footprint. It also demonstrates the absence of crowding-out effects between public and private agents. Assortative matching and heterogeneous returns in rental markets »\nAbstract: \nHousing returns exhibit a high degree of unexplained heterogeneity across units. Using a nationwide data set containing administrative information on linked renters and owners for 4.5 million private rental dwellings in France\, we document heterogeneous returns on the rental market across levels of landlord income. By including landlords’ characteristics\, we are able to explain 90% of the heterogeneity in rental returns. In addition\, we find that high-income landlords invest in locations with lower rental returns and lower non-payment risk. As they also invest in locations with higher price appreciation\, gross total returns are relatively flat along the income distribution. We explain these findings by a novel theory of rental housing assignment\, implying assortative matching between tenants’ and landlords’ incomes. Depuis le milieu des années 2010\, les villes européennes\, l’un des plus grands marchés touristiques du monde\, ont été au cœur de ces conflits\, poussant souvent les gouvernements urbains à prendre position et à adopter des mesures pour réglementer le phénomène. Pourtant\, ce qui frappe\, c’est la diversité des formes prises par ces conflits et des modes de régulation qui ont été adoptés. Using machine-learning techniques\, we extract events about immigration and the economy from newswires. We then test a causal chain connecting events\, online political communication\, salience of particular cleavages\, and support for parties measured with individual voting intentions data\, with a specific focus on communication by populist anti-immigration politicians. We identify the impact of communication on polls by leveraging high-frequency communication data and variation in the 4G exposure of Italian municipalities as a shock to the accessibility of political communication online. In addition\, we measure the relevance of such effects in explaining support for parties by calibrating a structural model of political competition informed by the relationships uncovered by our reduced-form analysis. We use the model to evaluate (i) a counterfactual scenario where political parties compete in the absence of communication events\, and (ii) where parties cannot affect migration salience with communication. To understand why and how\, we use a novel micro-level dataset of 6\,247 robo-advisor clients who made 9\,250 changes to their investment portfolios between 2015 and 2022. Micro-level demographic and financial variables as well as macro-level market returns and volatility are factors in the decision to change one’s passively managed portfolio. In addition\, how these changes affected investors’ returns are studied. We ask whether Islamic radicalization and related violence can be countered through campaigning by local religious organizations. We follow a campaign against violence in the province of Cabo Delgado\, Mozambique\, a setting that has seen a recent violent insurgency. The campaign focused on the key message that religion is not violent. It was broadcasted through community radios and individual voice messages sent to cell phones. We measure the impact of the campaign on violent events\, various behavioral measures including anti-social behavior and trust\, as well as survey attitudes. We find that the campaign decreased the incidence of violent events in the province. In addition\, although it decreased radical attitudes\, it also increased fear. Citizens can participate in a referendum over two options which are horizontally differentiated on a policy space. The citizens are risk averse and imperfectly informed about the exact political implications associated with each option presented to them. Each has an ideal point on the policy space capturing their intrinsic political preference. During a campaign\, a signal that is non-negatively correlated with each option’s true political implications becomes freely available. We capture political disengagement as a voluntary decision to ignore the information that will be released during the campaign. By opposition\, engaged citizens follow the campaign and learn the signal. We show that disengagement on behalf of all citizens arises in equilibrium if the outcome of the referendum does not depend on the signal. When the outcome of the referendum depends on the signal that is revealed\, two equilibria can arise. When the uncertainty surrounding both options is relatively similar\, all citizens engage. When one option is relatively more uncertain than the other some individuals\, characterized by extreme political ideologies\, decide to disengage as they accurately anticipate that\, should their preferred option be the outcome of the vote\, its political implications will not be as extreme as they would like them to be. Climate shocks\, insurance demand & wellbeing »\n  \nNatural hazards are becoming more frequent and more intense\, presenting new challenges for climate insurances. Existing evidence tends to focus on experimental studies or the short-run impact of actual disasters. We utilize original survey data on a sample of Swedish forest owners interviewed three years after Gudrun\, the ‘storm of the century’\, which caused extensive damages to Southern Swedish forest in January 2005. We first document the timing of insurance take-up in response to hurricane occurrence over fifty years\, then focus on the middle/long run response to Gudrun. We exploit the quasi-random spatial nature of the shock while conditioning on forest types obtained from remote-sensed data. Our empirical analysis shows evidence of a persistence effect of actual damages on insurance demand. It is consistent with a long-term impact on subjective well-being\, which may be due to capital destruction\, non-pecuniary losses and fear. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nAngelino Viceisza\nMIT & Spelman College\n \n \nFintech\, Visual Attention\, and Financial Inclusion: A Field Experiment on Migrant Remittances\nWith Eduardo Nakasone (Michigan State University) and Máximo Torero (Food and Agriculture Organization/FAO)\n\nAbstract: Migrant remittances to low- and middle-income countries were close to 650 billion US dollars in 2022\, impacting about one billion people worldwide. Despite this\, sending remittances remains relatively costly. Policymakers have argued that fintech\, specifically\, comparison websites like kayak.com but for sending money\, can boost financial inclusion and reduce remittance prices. Yet\, little is known about how a key segment of consumers — migrants with limited (financial) education and trust in digital methods — interacts with fintech. We collaborate with a World Bank certified comparison website to conduct a field experiment among Central American migrants. We vary remittance-company attributes shown to migrants on a comparison website\, specifically\, the time to delivery and customer reviews\, to assess the potential for fintech to impact their choices. We use visual attention data to assess the information-processing mechanisms that lead to such choices. Our findings are as follows. First\, migrants are more likely to « experiment » with companies when shown prior customer reviews than delivery speed. Second\, they respond to information as expected by choosing companies that are better reviewed and faster. Third\, we cannot rule out that  experimentation is welfare-reducing: those with a preference for lower fees (or faster companies) end up choosing pricier (or slower) companies when shown more information. Finally\, these effects are more pronounced for migrants with low financial literacy and no prior awareness of fintech.
