SUMMARY:Séminaire: Isabelle Salle (University of Ottawa)
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire programme 4 – BSE\n\n \n\nIsabelle Salle\n(University of Ottawa) \n  \n« Lifetime memories of inflation : evidence from surveys and the lab  »\n  \nAbstract: We study how individuals’ memories of inflation shape their expectations about future inflation using both surveys and laboratory experiments. Recalling having lived through prior disinflations has pronounced effects on how long-lived people expect the current inflation episode to be. Information treatments though games in which people experience with prior disinflationary episodes similarly strongly reduce inflation expectations of individuals on average and are often recalled as inflation memories months later. We also show that when people forecast inflation in the lab\, the inflation dynamics in the game can affect their beliefs much like the inflation experienced in real life. Methodologically\, we contrast surveys and lab experiments and discuss the pros and cons of each method\, emphasizing the general consistency across the two methodologies.

SUMMARY:Séminaire Job Market : Marco Duenas
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire Job Market BSE\n  \n\nMarco Duenas\nSenior Researcher at Climafin\, Paris\, France \n\n  \nBeing at the core: firm product specialisation\n \nAbstract:We propose a novel measure to investigate firms’ product specialisation at the firm-product level: \textit{product coreness}\, that captures the centrality of exported products within the firm’s export basket. We study product coreness using firm-product level data between 2018 and 2020 for Colombia\, Ecuador\, and Peru. Three main findings emerge from our analysis. First\, coreness is positively related to export volumes\, which also holds when decomposing it into products’ export share and their proximity to the rest of the firm’s export basket. Second\, this latter component is particularly relevant for products that do not account for the largest share of firms’ exports. Third\, such firm-level patterns also have implications at the aggregate level: products that are\, on average\, exported with higher coreness have higher export flows at the country level. Therefore\, the paper shows that how closely a product fits within a firm’s capabilities is important for economic performance at the firm and country levels. We explore these issues both with descriptive evidence exploring the key features of coreness and its relationship with other measures put forward in the literature and within an econometric framework exploring the relationship between coreness and trade volumes.\n  \n  \n  \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire: Professeur Mahefassoa Randrianalijaona
Aperçu régional des enseignements tirés de l’Afrique« \n  \nDespite of enormous efforts since independence to alleviate poverty and improve its people’s quality of life\, the African continent continues to face frequent political unrest and have low to moderate economic growth rate\, with the exception of few countries now classified as emerging states. For decades\, the economic growth of the African continent has been widely dominated by private cosumption. Lately\, there is a shift and investment becomes now the main contributing sector and human capital is expected to play an important role. \nIn Africa\, the contribution of the HEIs sector to the economic growth of the continent is relatevily modest and\, most of the time\, not counted or under-estimated. Because of the very limited capacity of countries\, HEIs sector has not given its due importance and is receiving a meaningless part of national budgets. This poor funding allocated to the HEIs sector is considered by many as a proof of how the sector is badly perceived by governments in the continent. The lack of or insufficient funding to the sector impacts negatively its capacity to be competitive and also the capability of its actors to properly play their role\, especially in terms of research and academic activities. The shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was too important for the sector. Universities were closed and the lock-down lasts for many months during which no activity was performed. The very limited resources  they are allocated to were not sufficient even to mitigate partly the impact of the pandemic to the sector. In many countries\, distance learning was not possible because most students and teachers were not provided with relevant materials and equipment. Offices were closed and universities administration could not operate from the campus. Internet infrastucture exists but was limited to cover only some places of the campus. In many cases\, it became clear that business continuity plans were not in place. The impact of this COVID-19 pandemic is so important and HEIs sector actors are now wondering if this tragedy could be the starting point of government awareness for HEIs’ resilience building. \n>> Salle H1-211 \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n  \n> Pour suivre le séminaire sur ZOOM\, contactez julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire: Etienne Lepers (OCDE)
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 4\n  \nEtienne Lepers\n(OCDE) \n  \nWhat Drives Capital to Green Companies in Emerging Markets: Evidence from Investment Funds\n  \nLeveraging on a detailed portfolio-level dataset of the largest 37 000 investment funds in the world\, this paper explores the role of investment funds in financing green companies in Emerging Markets (EMs) and allocation drivers. First\, the paper demonstrates that despite a boom in “sustainable” investing at the global level\, companies involved in carbon solutions (renewable energy\, transport and infrastructure)\, and particularly so in EMs\, represent a very small fraction of reported “sustainable” investment. Second\, fund-level and asset-level regressions highlight several important fund and country characteristics as drivers of green investments. Younger funds\, retail investor funds\, funds with domestic mandates\, and sustainable funds are more likely to invest in green companies and respectively less likely to invest in fossil fuel companies. We demonstrate the importance for EM green companies to be included into EM benchmarks\, while listed firms’ concentration of ownership is negatively associated with green investments. Greater green allocation in EMs is also associated with higher portfolio flows openness\, and more economic freedom. In addition\, several climate-related drivers such as exports in renewable manufacturing products or a country’s share in energy generation are also positively associated with higher allocation.

DESCRIPTION: \nSéminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nClara Delavallade\n(Banque Mondiale) \n  \n  \n“Measuring and improving socio-emotional skills among young unemployed men and women in Tanzania”\n  \nIndividuals’ socio-emotional skills (SES) and their perceptions of their own SES both matter for labor market outcomes\, as well as for a host of other economic and welfare outcomes. We deploy novel sets of self-reported and behavioral measures of 14 SES among over 4\,000 male and female youth not in full-time education\, employment or training (NEET)\, in urban and peri-urban Tanzania. We find that men have higher levels of self-reported SES than women. These self-reports are strongly correlated with social desirability and internalized conservative gender norms. By contrast\, gender gaps on behavioral measures are only observed for a limited number of skills and far smaller in magnitude. There is a larger gap between self-reported and behavioral measures among men\, and we provide suggestive evidence that this reflects men’s overestimation of their own skills\, rather than women’s underestimation. We next examine the impact of various SES trainings on labor market outcomes for this NEET population. We find that skill perceptions matter for labor market outcomes and that impacts of SES trainings are concentrated among those initially searching for a job. \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \n\nSébastien Rouillon \n(BSE)\n\n \nSustainable management of space activity in low Earth orbit\n\n\n\n\nJulien Guyot and Sébastien Rouillon \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis paper extends the analysis initiated by Rouillon (2020) of the externality caused by space debris. Satellite operators make choices about the design and launch of satellites\, while in-orbit servicing firms supply efforts to remove space debris. Focusing on the long-term orbital state\, we compare two management regimes. The open access equilibrium occurs when the orbit is a common resource. The optimal policy maximizes the net present value generated periodically by the space industry. We investigate economic instruments capable of effectively regulating space activity. We show that the combination of an ad valorem tax\, a launch tax\, and a market for removal effort certificates can provide the right incentives. A numerical application using a realistic calibration illustrates our results.

Nevertheless\, banks are expected to support the recovery. This study investigates which effect dominates by exploring how typhoons affect the lending activities of banks in China. It relies on the exposure of more than 161\,000 bank branches held by 327 Chinese banks over the period from 2004 to 2019. Our difference-in-difference estimates reveal that\, on average\, typhoons trigger a decrease in lending that accounts for 2.8 percent of total bank assets. This decline comes from commercial banks. On the contrary\, rural banks act as shock absorbers. This may be the consequence of long-term lending relationships and banks’ better knowledge of local economic and physical risks. The absence of rural banks is even found to be detrimental to local post-typhoon growth. Last\, government ownership and external political pressure mitigate the relative decline in lending by typhoon-hit commercial banks.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n>> pour assister au séminaire sur ZOOM\, contactez  julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr\n \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION: \nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \n\n \n\nCorentin Roussel\n(Univ. Strasbourg) \n  \n » Should new prudential regulation discriminate green credit risk ? A macrofinancial study for the Output Floor case »\n  \n\n\n\nDifferentiated treatment of green credit risk in banks’ capital requirements to favor green transition generates lot of debates among European prudential regulators. The aim of this paper is to examine whether the key Basel 3 finalization instrument – the Output Floor – should be applied to green credit risk in order to ensure stability of banking system and promote green finance. To do so\, we assess macrofinancial and environmental benefits of such green policy for the Euro Area through the lens of a general equilibrium model. We get three main results. First\, when banks get transitory ’environmental awareness’\, an Output Floor (OF) applied to brown credits only (i.e. a brown OF) faces a trade-off between limiting environmental aftermaths and reaching OF objectives (i.e reducing volatility of banks’ capital adequacy ratio). Second\, to mitigate the prudential cost of this trade-off\, brown OF should be joined with additional green financial policies such as green Quantitative Easing. Third\, pollutant emissions tax erodes brown OF efficiency along financial and economic cycles but limits the welfare cost implied by pollution in the long run.

Leveraging multiple causal inference methods\, we compare carbon and air pollutant emissions of the actual and counterfactual German transport sector following the 1999 eco-tax reform and demonstrate sizable reductions in carbon\, particulate matter\, and nitrogen dioxide emissions. Using official cost estimates\, the environmental tax saved around 80 billion Euros of external costs\, predominantly relating to pollution reduction benefits. We further show that environmental taxation contributed substantially to fostering low-carbon innovation. In complementary analyses\, we document much stronger demand responses to increases in environmentally-motivated taxes than to market price movements\, which we relate primarily to increased tax salience in newspapers. Our findings highlight the roles of salience and fuel substitution in mediating the effectiveness of fuel taxes to deliver climate and pollution reduction benefits.\n\n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 2 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

We estimate the effect of the introduction of Sky News on the vote swing between the 2016 and 2019 national elections. We employ a difference-in-differences approach using poll results at over 7\,000 polling places and the share of voters at each polling place whose residence received the Sky News broadcast signal. Australia’s system of compulsory voting allows us to estimate how partisan TV news can persuade voters to switch party\, an effect which has proved difficult if not impossible to identify in other contexts where voters’ turnout can be endogenous. We find consistent evidence that access to Sky News resulted in reduced support for the Australian Labour Party (ALP) and an increase in support for the Liberal Party. \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le GPR HOPE –\n \n  \n  \n  \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nFlore Gubert\nDirecteur de recherche au LEDA (Paris Dauphine)\n \nTemporary migration response to climate variability. New evidence from three years of mobile phone data in Senegal \n \nAbstract: Households in Sahelian countries mostly rely on subsistence agriculture and livelihood means are generally dependent on the quality of a single rainy season (June to October). Income streams are thus often marked with a high degree of seasonality – especially in the rural sector – and are exposed to shocks with the occasional occurrence of poor rainy season conditions. Such variations in the level of productivity across space and over time could presumably induce some adjustments in short-term labour reallocation dynamics\, whereby individuals temporarily relocate to places where they are more productive. However\, little is known about the scale and precise nature of temporary migration decisions as a viable strategy in the face of climate stresses. This can be partly attributed to the difficulty of measuring subtler human movements with traditional survey methods and the resulting glaring lack of detailed data on short-term movements. In this study\, we exploit a multi-year mobile phone dataset in Senegal that allows us to obtain a uniquely granular temporary migration matrix. By observing short-term movements of millions of individuals across more than 900 locations that experience various levels of precipitations over three years\, we are able to provide new insights on the temporary reallocation of labour across space in the context of local climate variability.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n \n \n  \n

To this end\, we exploit adverse events (explosions\, fires\, floods\, etc.) at research institutions as exogenous physical capital shocks. Scientists experience a substantial and persistent reduction in research output if they lose specialized physical capital\, that is\, equipment and material they created over time for a particular research purpose. In contrast\, they quickly recover if they only lose generic physical capital. Affected scientists in older laboratories\, which presumably lose more obsolete physical capital\, are more likely to change their direction of research and recover in scientific productivity. These findings suggest that a scientist’s investments into their own physical capital yield lasting returns but also create path dependence in relation to research direction. \nhttps://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3912401 \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 1 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nOlivier Brossard \n(Sciences Po Toulouse) \n  \n« Proximity relations and the fate of VC-backed startups: evidence from a worldwide 34-year-long dataset » \n(avec Nicolas Bédu et Matthieu Montalban) \n  \nAbstract : \n« The characteristics of financial arrangements established to finance startups affect their fate. Among these features\, we particularly focus on the proximities and differences between venture capital (VC) investors in syndicated investments. We consider the proximities between investors in a startup and between them and the startup. On the background of the theoretical literature dealing with proximity relations\, we distinguish five types of proximities between VC investors and between VC investors and the startups they finance: geographic\, institutional\, organizational\, social and cognitive proximities. We then test six hypotheses regarding the impacts of these proximities on the likelihood of three events that can happen to VC-backed startups: obtaining a later stage round of funding; going public; being merged or acquired. We implement these tests on a 34-year-long-68-countries-large sample\, using survival models adapted to account for tied failures and competing events. We find that the five forms of proximity relations are influential\, but with distinct roles. We also find that their impacts are nonlinear\, in the sense that too much proximity/distance always ends-up reverting the effects of proximity/distance. Finally\, we observe that\, like theoretical literature predicts\, cognitive proximity is positively correlated to the probability of a M&A\, but negatively correlated to the likelihood of an IPO » \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 1 / BSE –\n \n \n \n  \nAgenda > Tous les événements

SUMMARY:Séminaire: Julien Daubanes (DTU & MIT)
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nJulien Daubanes\nDTU – Technical University of Denmark (Department of Technology\, Management and Economics) \nand MIT (Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research) \n  \nThe Sensitivity of Economic Oil Reserves and its Risk Premium\n  \nClimate action will make the production of carbon resources less profitable\, reducing economically exploitable oil reserves and their value\, with implications for the climate\, the oil industry\, and its investors. In this paper\, we measure the sensitivity of economic oil reserves and study the role of this sensitivity in oil companies’ market valuation. \nConventional financial analysis already estimates oil companies’ exposure to oil price changes\, among other factors. Yet we claim that its standard model focuses on the impact of oil prices at the intensive margin and ignores changes in economic reserves. \nFirst\, we present a theoretical decomposition of the effect of an output price on a firm’s value through the intensive and extensive margins\, which we use to extend the conventional analysis of how oil price movements affect oil companies. We obtain a new testable model relating oil companies’ expected stock returns to both oil price fluctuations and the elasticity of economic oil reserves. We validate this model by exploiting financial data. The model improves the prediction of expected stock returns. Its estimation\, however\, does not identify the elasticity of economic reserves. \nSecond\, we measure the elasticity of economic reserves to the oil price by exploiting oil reserve data. We obtain local\, time-varying elasticities of oil companies’ economic reserves\, a new metric that we call LEER. \nThird\, we use LEER measures to explain oil companies’ stock returns. \nOur results indicate a LEER-premium\, showing that the risk associated with more sensitive economic reserves is material to investors who demand compensation from oil companies for the possibility of stranded assets. \nBesides our methodological contribution\, and our results’ addition to the literature on transition risks\, we provide LEER new measures that have desirable statistical properties for the study of oil companies’ financial vulnerability and behavior. \n  \nCo-Authors: \n Saraly Andrade de Sa (University of Copenhagen (IFRO) \nDiego S.
