SUMMARY:Séminaire: Flore Gubert (LEDA\, Paris Dauphine)
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nFlore Gubert\nDirecteur de recherche au LEDA (Paris Dauphine)\n \nTemporary migration response to climate variability. New evidence from three years of mobile phone data in Senegal \n \nAbstract: Households in Sahelian countries mostly rely on subsistence agriculture and livelihood means are generally dependent on the quality of a single rainy season (June to October). Income streams are thus often marked with a high degree of seasonality – especially in the rural sector – and are exposed to shocks with the occasional occurrence of poor rainy season conditions. Such variations in the level of productivity across space and over time could presumably induce some adjustments in short-term labour reallocation dynamics\, whereby individuals temporarily relocate to places where they are more productive. However\, little is known about the scale and precise nature of temporary migration decisions as a viable strategy in the face of climate stresses. This can be partly attributed to the difficulty of measuring subtler human movements with traditional survey methods and the resulting glaring lack of detailed data on short-term movements. In this study\, we exploit a multi-year mobile phone dataset in Senegal that allows us to obtain a uniquely granular temporary migration matrix. By observing short-term movements of millions of individuals across more than 900 locations that experience various levels of precipitations over three years\, we are able to provide new insights on the temporary reallocation of labour across space in the context of local climate variability.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n \n \n  \n

To this end\, we exploit adverse events (explosions\, fires\, floods\, etc.) at research institutions as exogenous physical capital shocks. Scientists experience a substantial and persistent reduction in research output if they lose specialized physical capital\, that is\, equipment and material they created over time for a particular research purpose. In contrast\, they quickly recover if they only lose generic physical capital. Affected scientists in older laboratories\, which presumably lose more obsolete physical capital\, are more likely to change their direction of research and recover in scientific productivity. These findings suggest that a scientist’s investments into their own physical capital yield lasting returns but also create path dependence in relation to research direction. \nhttps://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3912401 \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 1 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nOlivier Brossard \n(Sciences Po Toulouse) \n  \n« Proximity relations and the fate of VC-backed startups: evidence from a worldwide 34-year-long dataset » \n(avec Nicolas Bédu et Matthieu Montalban) \n  \nAbstract : \n« The characteristics of financial arrangements established to finance startups affect their fate. Among these features\, we particularly focus on the proximities and differences between venture capital (VC) investors in syndicated investments. We consider the proximities between investors in a startup and between them and the startup. On the background of the theoretical literature dealing with proximity relations\, we distinguish five types of proximities between VC investors and between VC investors and the startups they finance: geographic\, institutional\, organizational\, social and cognitive proximities. We then test six hypotheses regarding the impacts of these proximities on the likelihood of three events that can happen to VC-backed startups: obtaining a later stage round of funding; going public; being merged or acquired. We implement these tests on a 34-year-long-68-countries-large sample\, using survival models adapted to account for tied failures and competing events. We find that the five forms of proximity relations are influential\, but with distinct roles. We also find that their impacts are nonlinear\, in the sense that too much proximity/distance always ends-up reverting the effects of proximity/distance. Finally\, we observe that\, like theoretical literature predicts\, cognitive proximity is positively correlated to the probability of a M&A\, but negatively correlated to the likelihood of an IPO » \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 1 / BSE –\n \n \n \n  \nAgenda > Tous les événements

SUMMARY:Séminaire: Julien Daubanes (DTU & MIT)
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nJulien Daubanes\nDTU – Technical University of Denmark (Department of Technology\, Management and Economics) \nand MIT (Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research) \n  \nThe Sensitivity of Economic Oil Reserves and its Risk Premium\n  \nClimate action will make the production of carbon resources less profitable\, reducing economically exploitable oil reserves and their value\, with implications for the climate\, the oil industry\, and its investors. In this paper\, we measure the sensitivity of economic oil reserves and study the role of this sensitivity in oil companies’ market valuation. \nConventional financial analysis already estimates oil companies’ exposure to oil price changes\, among other factors. Yet we claim that its standard model focuses on the impact of oil prices at the intensive margin and ignores changes in economic reserves. \nFirst\, we present a theoretical decomposition of the effect of an output price on a firm’s value through the intensive and extensive margins\, which we use to extend the conventional analysis of how oil price movements affect oil companies. We obtain a new testable model relating oil companies’ expected stock returns to both oil price fluctuations and the elasticity of economic oil reserves. We validate this model by exploiting financial data. The model improves the prediction of expected stock returns. Its estimation\, however\, does not identify the elasticity of economic reserves. \nSecond\, we measure the elasticity of economic reserves to the oil price by exploiting oil reserve data. We obtain local\, time-varying elasticities of oil companies’ economic reserves\, a new metric that we call LEER. \nThird\, we use LEER measures to explain oil companies’ stock returns. \nOur results indicate a LEER-premium\, showing that the risk associated with more sensitive economic reserves is material to investors who demand compensation from oil companies for the possibility of stranded assets. \nBesides our methodological contribution\, and our results’ addition to the literature on transition risks\, we provide LEER new measures that have desirable statistical properties for the study of oil companies’ financial vulnerability and behavior. \n  \nCo-Authors: \n Saraly Andrade de Sa (University of Copenhagen (IFRO) \nDiego S. DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nStéphane Lemarié\ndirecteur de recherche à l’INRAE\, à l’UMR GAEL à Grenoble \n  \n\nBundle of Patents and Licensing of Biotechnology Traits\n(avec Corinne Langinier). \n  \n » We analyze the interactions between biotechnology companies that license their patented transgenic traits to a seed producer who combines them into seeds offered to farmers. If patented traits are licensed in a bundle\, they cannot be unbundled; thus\, the seed producer cannot combine traits from different biotech firms. Therefore\, farmers cannot buy seeds with (potentially more efficient) traits from different biotech companies. We consider a model in which an incumbent biotech company in the upstream market can license its traits either separately or in a bundle to a seed producer (in the downstream market)\, who chooses to offer product lines containing seeds (that combine traits) to heterogeneous farmers. We first study a monopolist upstream market and then a competitive upstream market\, in which a competitor offers a more efficient trait than the incumbent. We find that\, in equilibrium\, the incumbent always sells its traits separately\, which enables it to extract more rent from the downstream market. The effect of the equilibrium strategy (compared with the bundling strategy) on welfare depends on a trade-off. While a double margin always reduces welfare\, the seed product line effect increases welfare. Therefore\, the equilibrium strategy might be welfare-reducing if the second effect is smaller than the former. This occurs when the product line contains seeds with similar trait efficiency ». \n\n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 1 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nAbel François\n(EM Strasbourg Business School\, Université de Strasbourg) \nSophie Panel\n(Sciences Po Grenoble\, Université Grenoble Alpes\, CESICE) \n  \nInternational aid is sensitive to dictators’ facial competence!\nAbstract: Previous research shows that aid donors react to the quality of governance in recipient countries: they tend to avoid countries with poor institutions\, where aid is more likely to be misused. In non-democratic countries\, however\, successful aid implementation depends not only on the quality of institutions but also on the characteristics of political leaders. In this paper\, we test the hypothesis that donors rely in part on the impressions conveyed by dictators’ faces to assess their propensity to divert or otherwise misuse foreign aid. In particular\, we test whether non-democratic countries receive more aid when they are ruled by a dictator who looks either competent or trustworthy. We analyse the relationship between facial impressions and foreign aid on a sample of about 100 non-democratic countries observed over the period 1975-2010. Impressions of competence and trustworthiness were collected using a computer-based survey in which we asked anonymous respondents to rate pictures of 274 non-democratic leaders on competence and trustworthiness. We draw three main conclusions. First\, competent looking dictators attract more foreign aid\, but we do not find a similar relationship between aid and perceived trustworthiness. Second\, the relationship between facial impressions and aid is stronger for general budget support than for targeted aid\, and for cash aid than for aid in kind: these patterns suggest that donors attach more importance to the competence of the recipient when aid is easier to divert. Third\, two-part models suggest that the probability of receiving aid\, but not the amount of aid received\, is sensitive to dictators’ facial competence. \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

However\, the long-term effects and optimal frequency remain uncertain. We propose a very simple model in which the marginal return of an additional reminder decreases\, while fatigue increases over time and with the number of reminders. The race between costly cumulative efforts and the informational and attentional benefits of reminders determines individuals’ protection levels in the short and long run. In the short term\, increased prevention use is favored by a higher marginal return of information compared to its cost\, while in the long term\, the rise in fatigue due to this information leads to a decrease in its usage. We next focus on insecticide-treated bednets to prevent malaria\, a technology that is highly effective when widely adopted and generates positive health externalities. We combine surveys\, unique high-frequency data on net usage with a randomized experiment using generic and specific reminders.  We find that while malaria targeted messages are effective in the short term\, they have little effect in the long term. Moreover\, the higher the frequency\, the less effective the reminders are. \n  \n\n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire (programme 3 – BSE)\n  \nMichael Grimm \n(University of Passau) \n  \nSupporting small firms in a fragile context: Comparing matching and cash grants in Burkina Faso\n  \nAbstract: We used a randomized trial to compare matching grants earmarked for business development services with more flexible cash grants and with no support. The experiment was implemented in a fragile setting where subsidizing innovative activities might be particularly important. Firms were selected on the basis of a business plan competition. All firms were operating in sectors related to agriculture. After two years\, beneficiaries of cash grants were clearly performing better than beneficiaries of matching grants and firms in the control group\, and were more resilient to the COVID-19 crisis. However\, even for beneficiaries of cash\, improvements were limited to investment\, business practices\, innovation skills\, and survival\, with no transformative effects on profits and employment\, except for firms in industry and services. Beneficiaries of matching grants showed improved management practices and somewhat higher innovation skills\, but complained about complex procurement. Implementation costs were 25% higher for matching than for cash grants. \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n \n \n \n  \n

Investors are reeling\, tax collections are below projections\, and people are pointing fingers. On the business side\, companies have shut down\, farms have failed\, workers have lost their jobs\, and consumers face high prices. Why has legal weed failed to deliver on many of its promises? \nThis general survey presentation gives a broad and accessible overview of the problems faced by the legal weed industry in the many states that have embarked upon various forms of the legalization experiment. The idea is to take on the euphoric claims about cannabis markets with straight dope and a full dose of economic reality. \nThis is not a technical paper\, but rather a frank\, fact-filled\, entertaining presentation aimed at a general audience of agricultural economists across fields who may not have any exposure to the legal cannabis industry but may be interested in its progress\, future potential\, and ability to contribute to local and national economic production and become a bona fide part of agricultural economics. \nIn this presentation\, I offer the unadulterated facts about the new legal segment of one of the world’s oldest industries. I offer a summary of the main questions\, analyses\, and conclusion in my recently published book on cannabis economics\, co-authored with Daniel Sumner\, entitled “Can Legal Weed Win?” (University of California Press\, 2022). \nI draw upon data and anecdotes from our own experience working with California cannabis regulators since 2016. I explain why many cannabis businesses and some aspects of legalization fail to measure up\, while others occasionally get it right. \nThe stories I tell stretch from before America’s first medical weed dispensaries opened in 1996 through the short-term boom in legal consumption that happened during COVID-19 lockdowns. The presentation is peppered with unexpected insights about how cannabis markets can thrive\, how regulators get the laws right or wrong\, and what might happen to legal and illegal cannabis markets going forward. \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n \n \n  \n

In a second step\, I analyse the aggregate effect of average road insecurity faced by each of the localities on its potential migration market. The findings show that the stock of economic migrants is only weakly correlated with average road insecurity\, suggesting  that reduction in accessibility of some destinations due to conflict is offset by migration to alternative destinations. New seasonal departures in migration instead are reduced for individuals in localities with high average road insecurity\, and these effects are stronger in localities affected by droughts.\n\n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n \n  \n \n \n  \n
