DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \n Stefano Bianchini\n(BETA – Université de Strasbourg) \n  \nArtificial Intelligence in Science: Unlocking Creativity or Reinventing Limits?\n  \nAbstract: The use of AI for scientific discovery has advanced at pace in the last decades. This technology holds great potential to transform research\, yet concerns have been voiced about its adverse\, often unintended consequences. Can AI actually boost scientific creativity and lead to more innovative and impactful discoveries? Thus far\, answers to this question remain largely anecdotal and confined to a handful of disciplines. In this paper\, we study the diffusion of AI across 80 scientific fields from 2000 to 2022 and its impact on creativity\, measured through novelty and impact. We find that AI adoption has accelerated in nearly all disciplines since the early 2010s and that research activity has become increasingly concentrated in three major regions: the EU\, the US\, and China. Our analysis confirms an overall positive effect of AI on scientific creativity\, though with considerable variation across fields: while most have benefited\, some have seen little to no gains\, and a few have even experienced negative returns. We propose that the structural organization of knowledge within a field – and\, by extension\, the patterns of knowledge production – may moderate the influence of AI on scientific discovery. Specifically\, we show that AI enhances novelty\, but not impact\, most strongly in “rough” knowledge spaces\, where ideas are fragmented\, weakly connected\, and difficult for human cognition to navigate. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\nJosé Luis Torres\n(Université de Malaga) \n  \nOptimal Path for Orbital Debris\n \nAbstract: This paper introduces the DISE-2024 (Dynamic Integrated Space Economy) model\, an Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) designed to analyze the economics of efficient mitigation policies for orbital debris. The DISE-2024 model integrates an optimal neoclassical economic growth framework with a physical model of the Earth’s orbital environment\, capturing the dynamics of orbital debris and the likelihood of collisions. The economic component of the model determines the optimal consumption path and investments across two capital assets: Earth capital and space capital (i.e.\, satellites). The physical component models the endogenous generation of orbital debris\, accounting for factors such as launch activity\, in-orbit breakups\, and collisions. The model is simulated over a 200-year horizon under various policy scenarios\, including no intervention\, de-orbiting policy\, no breakups\, reusable launch vehicles\, debris-free launch systems\, collision avoidance\, and the European Space Agency’s (ESA) zero debris policy. A key finding of the study is that mitigation policies targeting debris emissions alone have a limited impact on reducing the long-term accumulation of orbital debris. In this way the sender may influence the receivers in their actions. The commitment assumption differentiates this information design exercise from the cheap talk literature (Crawford and Sobel (1982))\, allowing the sender to achieve a higher optimal value and theorists to provide powerful characterizations. However\, such commitment is often difficult to justify in practice\, due to interim incentives to deviate. Can reputation replace legal commitment for an institution making periodic announcements? Near the limiting case of ideal patience\, existing results imply a positive answer in value terms.
