Using a nationally representative experimental survey of 4\,508 respondents\, we elicit preferences across eight scenarios capturing disparities in preventive care\, access to providers\, waiting times\, avoidable hospitalizations\, and mortality. Respondents are randomly assigned to a control group receiving neutral descriptions or a treatment group exposed to fram ing that emphasizes individual responsibility for health outcomes. Results show that responsibility framing significantly reduces inequality aversion across all domains\, indicating greater acceptance of health disparities when presented as self-inflicted. The effect is heterogeneous: men are consistently less inequality-averse than women\, and framing further widens this gender gap. Income is negatively associated with aversion but plays a smaller moderating role. Preexisting responsibility beliefs do not significantly interact with framing\, suggesting that framing operates as a general heuristic rather than reinforcing prior attitudes. We develop a model of the intergenerational transmission of education based on insights from the literature on social science genetics. The model distinguishes between two types of genetic confounding. First\, narrow genetic confounding reflects the direct transmission of genetic predisposition towards education. Second\, broad genetic confounding captures direct genetic transmission as well as genetic nurture\, i.e.\, an influence of parental genes on children’s outcome through the family environment. Next\, we use the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) data to decompose the association between parental years of education and their offspring’s grades on Key Stage 4 national exams. To proxy genetic endowments\, we construct Educational Attainment Polygenic Indices (EA PGIs) for parents and children. To correct for measurement error\, we use Obviously-Related Instrumental Variables (ORIV) based on two independent PGIs. The results suggest that `broad genetic confounding’  explains 30-45% of the parent-child educational association\, and `narrow genetic confounding’ 18-33%. We find no meaningful differences between mothers and fathers. Using our model\, we compare our estimates to twin and adoptee designs\, and show how molecular genetic approaches rely on plausibly weaker assumptions. Introduced in 1965\, the program awarded large institutional grants to natural science and engineering departments at U.S. research universities. I exploit top-ranked universities excluded from the program as a comparison group in a difference-in-differences research design. First\, I find that Science Development awards increased faculty size\, the number of PhDs awarded\, and publications at funded universities. Second\, I find a patenting increase in commuting zones hosting funded universities\, primarily attributable to incumbent firms located near those institutions\, and driven by commuting zones with established R&D-intensive sectors. I find a larger effect in technology fields with high exposure to local universities’ research. I provide evidence indicating two main mechanisms behind the patenting increase: greater reliance on scientific knowledge in patenting and the employment of local PhD graduates in industrial R&D. \n\nGabriele Cristelli is Assistant Professor of Innovation Policy at the London School Of Economics (Department of Geography and Environment). We document that disappointment is frequently reported\, mostly reflecting the market’s preference for a more accommodative policy stance. Disappointment distinctly impacts the market’s perception of the monetary policy rule\, depresses stock prices\, and raises volatility in the days after announcements. The reversal patterns found and additional analysis are consistent with an investor-sentiment channel. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nTanguy Bernard\n(Bordeaux Sciences Economiques) \n  \nTraceability in the value chain: The case of certified cocoa in Côte d’Ivoire\n \nAbstract: This paper investigates the traceability of environmentally and socially sustainable (ESS) certified cocoa in Côte d’Ivoire\, the world’s leading cocoa-producing country. Despite ESS certification schemes\, significant information asymmetries persist within the value chain\, leaving room for opportunistic behaviors such as side-sourcing\, i.e. when conventional cocoa is labeled as certified. We explore reporting discrepancies regarding transactions of allegedly certified cocoa\, using survey data from farmers and middlemen\, and administrative data provided by cooperatives. We find large discrepancies between volumes declared by farmers and cooperatives across all cooperatives in our sample\, indicating widespread side-sourcing. Cooperatives report volumes 123% to 870% higher than farmers’ declarations\, while middlemen’s reports closely match farmers’. We further assess the impact of a new digital traceability system (DTS)\, implemented through a randomized controlled trial\, designed to reduce opacity in transactions between farmers and middlemen (and hence\, cooperatives). Despite comprehensive training\, adoption of the system remained minimal\, with less than 3% of transactions digitized in treated sections. Yet\, we find that cooperatives engaged in different misreporting practices in their traceability registers depending on treatment intensity: under low-intensity treatment\, they inflated reported volumes by creating numerous additional\, potentially fraudulent transactions\, whereas under intensive monitoring they shifted toward modifying existing records\, particularly reported volumes. Yet\, little is known about how community leaders and local implementers respond to financial incentives or how group decisions aggregate individual preferences in CBT. We conduct a cluster-randomized experiment in 180 Ethiopian villages to study the effects of incentive structures and discretion on administrative capture—defined as funds retained beyond benchmark implementation costs—in CBT. Local leaders were tasked with allocating real or hypothetical transfer budgets\, with discretion to retain up to 10% as “administrative costs”. We find that financial incentives significantly increase administrative capture\, and that capture increases with budget size. Group decisions yield higher appropriation than individual proposals\, suggesting implicit collusion rather than prosocial restraint in group-based decisions. Moreover\, when real stakes are at play\, group outcomes are disproportionately shaped by extreme (outlier) preferences\, whereas in hypothetical settings\, popular preferences dominate. However\, most of these surveys are collected amidst interventions on which respondents may have ex-ante information\, so they face the risk of respondents misreporting critical information to impact their eligibility status. Researchers conducting these surveys thus face important trade-off between informing respondents about the purpose of surveys and the associated implications of misreporting. How reliable is self-reported data? Do respondents misreport out of fear of exclusion? Who is more likely to misreport? How does this takeaway assistance from those who ‘truly’ deserve? The effects of awareness about ‘potential’ interventions on reporting behavior of respondents remain understudied\, especially in conflict zones where data is scare. To answer these questions\, this experiment tests the impact of an explicit signal of a forthcoming intervention in Sudan by randomly varying the placement of such a signal at the beginning or the end of a household survey conducted during war in 2024. No significant differences are found in reported income between treatment groups on average. However\, people who don’t perceive themselves as poorer post-conflict\, nor poorer compared to their neighborhood\, and those impacted by conflict are significantly more likely to misreport. We find small but systematic gender differences: female-authored speeches are slightly more accessible and more inclusive in pronoun use\, show subtly less deontic and hedging language\, and tilt modestly toward household-proximate themes. Interacting gender with a country–year crisis indicator reveals limited broad amplification\, i.e. most gaps are stable in crises\, though inclusiveness rises modestly and dispersion increases for tentativeness and\nhousehold emphasis during stress episodes. Effect sizes are uniformly modest in 𝑧-score units\, consistent with strong editorial and institutional norms that compress heterogeneity\, especially when stakes are high. Using HMDA data on jumbo applications (ineligible for GSE purchase) matched to census-tract disaster-risk measures\, I find that high disaster risk reduces the approval probability only in borrower-friendly states (nonrecourse or judicial): by about 5–6 percentage points for loan applications in the top decile of disaster risk. Loan terms of approved loans also adjust with the regime: loan-to-value ratios decline and interest rates rise with disaster risk more in nonrecourse than in recourse states\, though magnitudes are small. The results highlight how foreclosure laws materially affect the pass-through of location-specific risk to credit allocation and pricing. Conversely\, the effects of foreclosure laws depend on local (disaster) risk. In this paper\, we estimate employment\, unemployment and labor-force participation flows by age and gender and study their contributions to aggregate employment differences across a large panel of European countries. Employment outflows are the main source of employment variation for prime-age men\, whereas the inflows are quantitatively more important for women and young individuals. In addition\, labor-force participation flows account for a substantial share of employment variation across all demographic groups. We develop and calibrate a life-cycle DMP model consistent with these facts. The DISE-2024 model integrates an optimal neoclassical economic growth framework with a physical model of the Earth’s orbital environment\, capturing the dynamics of orbital debris and the likelihood of collisions. The economic component of the model determines the optimal consumption path and investments across two capital assets: Earth capital and space capital (i.e.\, satellites). The physical component models the endogenous generation of orbital debris\, accounting for factors such as launch activity\, in-orbit breakups\, and collisions. The model is simulated over a 200-year horizon under various policy scenarios\, including no intervention\, de-orbiting policy\, no breakups\, reusable launch vehicles\, debris-free launch systems\, collision avoidance\, and the European Space Agency’s (ESA) zero debris policy. A key finding of the study is that mitigation policies targeting debris emissions alone have a limited impact on reducing the long-term accumulation of orbital debris. This technology holds great potential to transform research\, yet concerns have been voiced about its adverse\, often unintended consequences. Can AI actually boost scientific creativity and lead to more innovative and impactful discoveries? Thus far\, answers to this question remain largely anecdotal and confined to a handful of disciplines. In this paper\, we study the diffusion of AI across 80 scientific fields from 2000 to 2022 and its impact on creativity\, measured through novelty and impact. We find that AI adoption has accelerated in nearly all disciplines since the early 2010s and that research activity has become increasingly concentrated in three major regions: the EU\, the US\, and China. Our analysis confirms an overall positive effect of AI on scientific creativity\, though with considerable variation across fields: while most have benefited\, some have seen little to no gains\, and a few have even experienced negative returns. We propose that the structural organization of knowledge within a field – and\, by extension\, the patterns of knowledge production – may moderate the influence of AI on scientific discovery. Specifically\, we show that AI enhances novelty\, but not impact\, most strongly in “rough” knowledge spaces\, where ideas are fragmented\, weakly connected\, and difficult for human cognition to navigate. Exploiting a staggered difference-in-differences design\, we also  observe significant crime declines in cities where these platforms  operate\, with the largest drops in violent offences\, petty theft\,  property damage\, and drug crimes. This project will examine how various natural and political events influence climate change narratives. Focusing on France from 2014 to 2024\, we will analyze the impact of natural hazards and ecological protests on climate-related views expressed across social media\, traditional media\, opinion surveys\, and political speeches. By incorporating multiple events into our analysis\, we aim to understand the dynamics and cumulative effects shaping public beliefs: after protests\, do the narratives (of both sides: activists and their opponents) mobilize the previous natural hazards? Moreover\, unlike previous studies\, we will pay particular attention to the potential heterogeneity in rhetoric and narrative as a function of individual characteristics and in particular\, their geographic location. DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nBenjamin Balsmeier\nUniversité du Luxembourg \n  \nInterpersonal mechanisms of absorptive capacity\n  \nAbstract: We return to the cognitive foundations of absorptive capacity and test the idea that personal experience in a field makes it easier for firms’ inventors to recognize and build upon local knowledge spillovers from other firms in that field. We propose a new empirical model of localized knowledge diffusion\, which 1) measures a firm’s absorptive capacity by its inventors’ prior experience in a field\, 2) uses a death instrument to exogenously vary the availability of knowledge of the same collaborative patent in different regions\, and 3) estimates the difference in citation likelihood from all subsequent inventors in both regions\, as a function of a potentially citing inventor’s prior experience in the field. Consistent with the original theory\, firms whose inventors have prior experience in a field are more likely to use locally available knowledge\, especially when that knowledge is complex and applied to new fields.
