Our framework models forward-looking students whose field choice determines their comparative advantage across occupations and their ability to adjust to shocks.  Using Danish administrative data\, we estimate key parameters while accounting for unobserved heterogeneity in both student preferences and worker skills\, addressing selection into fields and occupations. We use the model to evaluate how varying degrees of educational flexibility affect the labor market consequences of large economic shocks.  Allowing students to reallocate fields increases individual income gains\, with substantially larger gains when capacity constraints are removed. Whereas the effects of regulations on exports are well known\, the responses of importers to heterogeneous and frequently changing country-specific regulations are not well understood.We combine Swiss firm-level import customs transaction data with country-product-year-specific maximum residue limits to investigate the effect of pesticide regulatory heterogeneity on firm- level imports and assess the moderating role of firm size and global value chain participation. Relying on a global sourcing model\, we find that regulatory heterogeneity reduces imports butless so in larger\, and diversified firms. Participating in global value chains also improves firms’ flexibility toward heterogeneous regulation. Evidence from the 15M Movement in Spain\n \nWhat are the long term effects of protests? This paper studies how the level of attendance at simultaneous marches organized by the 15M (the Spanish Occupy movement) impacted electoral behavior and political attitudes in the following decade. Using regional variation in weather shocks as an instrumental variable for the level of attendance at simultaneous marches\, I find that cities with higher attendance  are more concerned about corruption and vote more for left wing and anti-corruption parties and less for far-right parties. Using novel data from Twitter\, I document a higher uptake of social media platforms after an offline protest and a persistent difference in online activity in cities with higher attendance. Using survey data\, I also show a higher electoral effect for people that have a social media account. Cependant\, les recherches reposant sur une comparaison quantitative se font souvent au détriment d’une connaissance détaillée de chaque contexte et d’une compréhension précise des mécanismes causaux en jeu. Coda Zabetta) \n\nABSTRACT. This paper explores the connection between Artificial Intelligence (AI) knowledge and green technological specialization\, focusing on the critical role of AI as a driver of innovation. We examine how AI-related research influences regional specialization in green technologies across US Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Using a comprehensive dataset of AI publications and patents spanning 1982–2017\, we test hypotheses about the effects of AI knowledge on green innovation. Our findings reveal that regions with strong AI knowledge stocks are better positioned to sustain green technological specialization. Moreover\, AI knowledge moderates the role of relatedness\, reducing reliance on pre-existing technological pathways. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire doctorants BSE\n  \nValentin Tissot\n(BSE)  \n  \nSelective Higher Education and Students’ Well-being\n \nAbstract:\nA substantial body of literature highlights the labor market benefits of attending elite higher education\, but less is known about its effects on students’ well-being. In France\, admission to selective tracks (« Higher school preparatory classes ») is determined through a centralized process based on local ranking. Using a regression discontinuity design\, we investigate the impact of scoring just above the cutoff on students’ well-being after enrollment. Using unique survey data\, we find that scoring above the cutoff increases students’ selective track enrollment by 66 percentage points and boosts satisfaction by 0.58 standard deviations for those who enroll. Students in these selective tracks miss fewer classes\, feel more optimistic about their professional future\, and\, despite initial challenges\, report feeling less overworked in subsequent years. They are also less likely to study alone. Boys and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds benefit the most from attending selective tracks. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nMarie Gauthier\n(BSE) \n  \nEnergy labels and property values : a quasi-experimental analysis of the French residential market\n  \nAbstract:\nIn this article\, we examine the impact of a French policy that arbitrarily modified the thresholds used to define property energy labels\, providing a natural experiment to assess the effect of simplified information on agents’ decision-making. In France\, energy labels include information on energy efficiency (EE) through a score expressed in kWhep/m2/year\, which is mapped onto color-coded rating bands (A-G). The arbitrary changes in the definition of these rating bands introduced by the 2021 French reform allow us to apply a difference-in-differences strategy to estimate the causal impact of a letter change on housing prices. Applying this strategy to 1.5 million property transaction between 2013 and 2023\, we provide strong evidence that buyers’ decision-making is significantly influenced by simplified information\, such as letter grades. Né de l’articulation des réflexions issues de trois projets initiés par le WP7 et menés par des juristes\, économistes et socio-anthropologues\, ce projet vise à renforcer son approche interdisciplinaire en intégrant les chercheurs en santé publique et leurs problématiques. However\, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here\, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs\, policy support\, information sharing intention\, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59\,440 participants from 63 countries\, the interventions’ effectiveness was small\, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics\, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%)\, policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%)\, information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%)\, and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last\, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors \n  \nThe role of health co-benefits in climate policy support\n[ongoing] \nThis paper investigates whether communicating that carbon pricing not only addresses long-term climate risks but also delivers immediate local public health benefits by reducing toxic air pollutants affects public support for climate policy. We study whether taking into account global envi- ronmental quality may better local environmental quality. To this aim we study a N-player game where both local and global amenity value of the en- vironmental quality are considered.We show that local environmental quality may not necessarily be better by this consideration.In the second part of the talk\, we analyse the case in which there is an infinite number of locations and agents are still competitive. Evidence from the Birth of the Welfare State\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe emergence of social insurance programs in Europe at the end of the 19th century laid the foundations of the welfare state. This coincided with an unprecedented wave of democratization\, including the expansion of the voting franchise and the formation of political parties. We provide new evidence supporting that a stable party system\, by extending governments’ time horizon and enhancing coordination capacity\, is a crucial condition for suffrage expansion to lead to large-scale redistributive programs. We exploit the staggered lifting of economic restrictions on the male franchise in Western European countries\, as well as a novel dataset on party stability since the early 19th century. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\nLaurène Petitfour\n(IRD) \n  \nComprehensive Assessment of the Impact of Mandatory Community-Based Health Insurance in Burkina Faso\nDelphine Boutin\, Laurène Petifour\, Yvonne Allard\, Souleymane Kontoubré\, Valéry Ridde \nOffering health coverage to informal workers and their families remains a significant challenge in most Sub-Saharan countries. As linking insurance to employment contracts is not possible and demand for insurance is too low to sustain voluntary schemes\, alternative approaches are required. One such approach is bundling health insurance with microcredit\, which we evaluate in this study. We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of a compulsory micro-health insurance scheme bundled with microcredit in Ouagadougou\, Burkina Faso. Among the 88 active microcredit groups (44 treated\, 44 control)\, we analyzed outcomes for 1\,095 individuals who reported illness episodes in the six months preceding the endline survey. We evaluated the effects of health insurance subscription on financial protection\, healthcare utilization\, and health outcomes\, estimating both the intention-to-treat effect (ITT) and the local average treatment effect (LATE). Our findings indicate no evidence of selective attrition or members opting out of the Microfinance Institution (MFI) due to the health insurance requirement; loan renewal rates remained consistent across treatment groups. Health insurance substantially and positively impacted financial protection: out-of-pocket expenditures decreased by over 50%\, and payment difficulties dropped by approximately 36%. The insurance also influenced healthcare-seeking behaviors\, with a marginally significant increase in modern healthcare facility use (+5%)\, a significant reduction in traditional medicine use (-61%)\, and improved timely care-seeking\, as more individuals sought care on the same day symptoms appeared (+23%). However\, no significant impact on physical or psychological health outcomes was observed. These results suggest that compulsory health insurance can provide meaningful financial protection against health risks for MFI members who lack social protection\, without compromising the MFI’s retention rate.
