Return migrants increase the local labor supply\, potentially hurting local workers. However\, having been exposed to the technologically advanced US economy\, they may also carry human capital that benefits non-migrants. Using an instrument based on involuntary return migration\, we find that\, whereas workers who share returnees’ occupations experience a fall in wages\, workers in other occupations see their wages rise. These effects are\, however\, transitory and restricted to the city-industry receiving the returnees. In contrast\, returnees permanently alter a city’s long-run industrial composition\, by raising employment levels in the local industries that hire them.  \n  \n*Dario Diodato is an Economist for the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. Previously\, between 2017 and 2019\, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University (Growth Lab\, Center for International Development). Before his PhD in Economic Geography at Utrecht University (2013-2017)\, he worked as a researcher in urban and regional economics for the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (2009-2012). DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nJackie Wahba \nUniversity of Southampton\n  \n« Expecting Brexit and UK Migration: Should I Go? » \nco-authored with Valentina Di Iasio \nAbstract: This paper examines the impact of the 2016 UK referendum and expecting Brexit on migration flows and net migration in the UK. We employ a Difference-in-Differences strategy and compare EU migration to non-EU migration before and immediately after the UK referendum of June 2016. We also investigate the potential secondary effects of the referendum on non-EU migrants by using different methodologies and various robustness checks.  Our results show that after the referendum (i) migration inflows from the EU declined\, (ii) emigration of EU migrants increased and (iii) net migration flows from EU countries to the UK fell. Our results are not driven by the potential spillover impacts on non-EU migrant workers. Overall\, the findings show that migration in the UK declined after the Brexit referendum\, even before any policy change. \nBio: Jackie Wahba is a Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics at the University of Southampton (UK).
