We propose a new empirical model of localized knowledge diffusion\, which 1) measures a firm’s absorptive capacity by its inventors’ prior experience in a field\, 2) uses a death instrument to exogenously vary the availability of knowledge of the same collaborative patent in different regions\, and 3) estimates the difference in citation likelihood from all subsequent inventors in both regions\, as a function of a potentially citing inventor’s prior experience in the field. Consistent with the original theory\, firms whose inventors have prior experience in a field are more likely to use locally available knowledge\, especially when that knowledge is complex and applied to new fields. We examine how AI-related research influences regional specialization in green technologies across US Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Using a comprehensive dataset of AI publications and patents spanning 1982–2017\, we test hypotheses about the effects of AI knowledge on green innovation. Our findings reveal that regions with strong AI knowledge stocks are better positioned to sustain green technological specialization. Moreover\, AI knowledge moderates the role of relatedness\, reducing reliance on pre-existing technological pathways. The 1952 breakup of Germany’s leading chemical company\, IG Farben\, represents such a disruption. After the Second World War\, the Allies occupying Germany imposed the breakup because of IG Farben’s importance for the German war economy instead of standard antitrust concerns. In technology areas where the breakup reduced concentration\, patenting increased strongly\, driven by domestic firms unrelated to IG Farben. In contrast\, increases in product-level competition do not increase innovation\, and the extent to which product markets related to a technology were affected by the breakup is unrelated to the increase in innovation. Similarly\, neither the movement of IG Farben inventors nor an increased propensity to patent or duplication of research drive the effect. Descriptively\, IG Farben’s successors increased their patenting activities as well\, and their patenting specialized relative to the pre-breakup period. Using a novel geo-referenced database of French patents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Oÿce (1838-1960)\, we assess the influence of the Catholic Church’s anti-scientific stance. Our results show that a one standard deviation in-crease in religiosity corresponds to a 1.1 decline in electrical patents. Education does not appear to be the main factor\, but societal progressiveness partially explains these findings. In this paper\, we argue that engagement with communities in online collaboration platforms also contributes to firms’ performance. First\, the ability to reuse knowledge and elicit contributions from external audiences accelerates product development. Second\, the engagement with online communities provides credible information about the firms’ technological and market potential at a stage where they lack track record\, mitigating information asymmetries and supporting the acquisition of valuable connections with external partners. We test our hypotheses on firms that use GitHub\, one of the largest digital platforms for collaboration in software development. We find that firms that reuse more code and elicit more collaboration reach public-facing milestones faster. To this end\, we exploit adverse events (explosions\, fires\, floods\, etc.) at research institutions as exogenous physical capital shocks. Scientists experience a substantial and persistent reduction in research output if they lose specialized physical capital\, that is\, equipment and material they created over time for a particular research purpose. In contrast\, they quickly recover if they only lose generic physical capital. Affected scientists in older laboratories\, which presumably lose more obsolete physical capital\, are more likely to change their direction of research and recover in scientific productivity. Among these features\, we particularly focus on the proximities and differences between venture capital (VC) investors in syndicated investments. We consider the proximities between investors in a startup and between them and the startup. On the background of the theoretical literature dealing with proximity relations\, we distinguish five types of proximities between VC investors and between VC investors and the startups they finance: geographic\, institutional\, organizational\, social and cognitive proximities. We then test six hypotheses regarding the impacts of these proximities on the likelihood of three events that can happen to VC-backed startups: obtaining a later stage round of funding; going public; being merged or acquired. We implement these tests on a 34-year-long-68-countries-large sample\, using survival models adapted to account for tied failures and competing events. We find that the five forms of proximity relations are influential\, but with distinct roles. We also find that their impacts are nonlinear\, in the sense that too much proximity/distance always ends-up reverting the effects of proximity/distance. If patented traits are licensed in a bundle\, they cannot be unbundled; thus\, the seed producer cannot combine traits from different biotech firms. Therefore\, farmers cannot buy seeds with (potentially more efficient) traits from different biotech companies. We consider a model in which an incumbent biotech company in the upstream market can license its traits either separately or in a bundle to a seed producer (in the downstream market)\, who chooses to offer product lines containing seeds (that combine traits) to heterogeneous farmers. We first study a monopolist upstream market and then a competitive upstream market\, in which a competitor offers a more efficient trait than the incumbent. We find that\, in equilibrium\, the incumbent always sells its traits separately\, which enables it to extract more rent from the downstream market. The effect of the equilibrium strategy (compared with the bundling strategy) on welfare depends on a trade-off. While a double margin always reduces welfare\, the seed product line effect increases welfare. Therefore\, the equilibrium strategy might be welfare-reducing if the second effect is smaller than the former. Strasbourg) \n  \nPersonality\, creativity and adherence to intellectual property: A lab experiment on copyright\nAbstract: \nThis paper aims to experimentally test the personalist rationale of copyright\, which posits that intellectual property is morally justified because creative activity is the intimate extension of creator’s personality and skills into the external world. To test this theory\, we have designed a theft game where participants are given the opportunity to steal or refrain from stealing creative outputs which vary in their degree of « personality ». We can therefore examine how the intrinsic adherence of people to copyright differs according to the intensity of the “personality” component that is included into a piece of art. Our results present a mixed picture\, indicating a treatment effect only among participants who have a strong preference for intellectual property rights. To our knowledge\, this work is the first to experimentally test the personalist theory of intellectual property. In this paper\, we aim to create an integrated framework for understanding the functions of systemic intermediaries in governing socio-technical transitions. It combines Sustainable Transitions Theory (STS) and New Institutional Economy (NIE) to explain the operations of systemic intermediaries and highlights the roles of meso-intermediaries. The study examines two examples of sustainable transitions in Brazil: reducing emissions in mobility and improving the quality of raw cow milk production. These cases demonstrate how different institutional contexts influence transition paths\, emphasizing the importance of meso-intermediaries in shaping these paths. Using administrative data from the accounting records of thousands of labs at U.S. research universities and a difference-in-differences framework\, we find that scientists employ fewer undergraduates and research staff in response to minimum wage changes. We further show that minimum wage changes lower scientific productivity and that there are small reallocation effects across labs. We employ a Difference-in-Differences strategy and compare EU migration to non-EU migration before and immediately after the UK referendum of June 2016. We also investigate the potential secondary effects of the referendum on non-EU migrants by using different methodologies and various robustness checks.  Our results show that after the referendum (i) migration inflows from the EU declined\, (ii) emigration of EU migrants increased and (iii) net migration flows from EU countries to the UK fell. Our results are not driven by the potential spillover impacts on non-EU migrant workers. Return migrants increase the local labor supply\, potentially hurting local workers. However\, having been exposed to the technologically advanced US economy\, they may also carry human capital that benefits non-migrants. Using an instrument based on involuntary return migration\, we find that\, whereas workers who share returnees’ occupations experience a fall in wages\, workers in other occupations see their wages rise. These effects are\, however\, transitory and restricted to the city-industry receiving the returnees. In contrast\, returnees permanently alter a city’s long-run industrial composition\, by raising employment levels in the local industries that hire them.  \n  \n*Dario Diodato is an Economist for the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. Previously\, between 2017 and 2019\, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University (Growth Lab\, Center for International Development). This transition was associated with a substantial increase in base funding from the Swedish government\, typically raised on an annual basis. We exploit encompassing data on publication on the full population of researchers to analyze the impact on scientific publication\, coauthorship\, affiliation and other organizational changes at treated units of the change. Using matched sample difference-in-difference regressions we find that publishing researchers raised their rate of publication substantially\, and this was explained primarily by the infusion of funding.We find evidence that the individuals who raised their rate of publication were predominantly male\, researchers rather than teachers and working in technical sciences. The rise in publications was associated with increased collaboration with coauthors primarily at one’s own university. Researchers decreased their number of affiliations with university colleges but raised their affiliations with other full universities\, and they were more likely to be promoted to associate professors after moving to other universities. Thus\, the status of becoming full university led to an adaptation in terms of behavior that started to look a lot like the behavior of researchers at established universities. Women’s participation in patenting varies across regions\, sectors\, and industries\, with higher representation in biotechnology\, food chemistry\, and pharmaceuticals\, and lower in mechanical engineering. Women inventors are more prevalent in academia than in the private sector\, and typically work in mostly-male teams or alone. This implies a shift from generic and primarily R&D-based innovation support measures towards a new (or third) ‘generation’ of innovation policy – variously referred to as challenge-led\, mission-orientated or transformative innovation policies. A more targeted and challenge-oriented innovation policy should\, it is argued\, help to deliver desired\, and not just more\, innovations. This implies a more active role of the state in funding risk-taking activities and in creating – not just correcting – markets. Whilst there is much agreement that bolder\, more customised and directional policies are needed to tackle the societal challenges of our time\, there is less consensus about how such policies should be implemented in practice. Pour les besoins du projet (base de données de profils LinkedIn dans le domaine des sciences informatiques)\,  nous avions besoin de dire pour chaque expérience\, s’il s’agit d’une  « expérience en IA» ou d’une « expérience non IA » . However\, only a few large-scale empirical studies investigate the factors leading to research independence and the link between research independence and academic success. Drawing upon unique data on the entire population of French STEM PhD students who graduated between 2004 and 2013\, we explore the factors leading PhDs to pursue independent research from their supervisors during their PhD training period\, and how independence links to their future career outcomes. Using an advanced neural network algorithm\, we measure independence as the content dissimilarity between PhD student thesis and supervisor’s publications content. We find that independence is significantly associated with student’s characteristics such as gender\, age\, nationality\, and supervisor’s academic profile. We also find that student’s independence predicts the probability of starting an academic career and\, conditional on starting an academic career\, a higher number of articles published during the 5 years after graduation. A determinant of their efficiency hitherto neglected is the separation in the licensing process of technical knowledge from the intellectual property rights that cover it. I study this question in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). Essential patents on communication standards such as LTE and Wi-Fi may be licensed upstream\, to firms that put the technical knowledge on the standard into practice\, or downstream to device makers. The choice of the licensing level is currently the subject of an intense debate. I present empirical evi- dence on the matter from a qualitative study comprising interviews with 30 individuals from 22 firms of different sizes and industries\, focusing on startups. For IoT device makers\, uncertainty regarding infringement\, patent validity\, and the licensing process emerge as hindrances to efficient licensing\, compounded for SMEs and startups by resource constraints. Implications for practice are that device- level licensing of standard-essential patents (SEPs)\, if broadly implemented\, would have a negative effect on innovation and entrepreneurship in the IoT. Policy makers should ensure that SEP-licensing is simplified. On a general and theoretical level\, my study shows that the level of the value chain to which patents are licensed need not coincide with the level on which the patented knowledge is put into practice\, and that the licensing level is an important contingency of the efficiency of markets for tech- nology. \n\n\n\n \n

DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\nNagore Iriberri\n(University of the Basque Country) \n\nGender Differences in Peer Recognition by Economists\nwith David Card\, Stefano DellaVigna and Patricia Funk \n  \n\nAbstract:\n\nWe study the selection of Fellows of the Econometric Society\, using a new data set of publications and citations for over 40\,000 actively publishing economists since the early 1900s.\nConditional on achievement\, we document a large negative gap in the probability that women were selected as Fellows in the 1933-1979 period. This gap became positive (though not statistically significant) from 1980 to 2010\, and in the past decade has become large and highly significant\, with over a 100% increase in the probability of selection for female authors relative to males with similar publications and citations. The positive boost affects highly qualified female candidates (in the top 10% of authors) with no effect for the bottom 90%. Using nomination data for the past 30 years\, we find a key proximate role for the Society’s Nominating Committee\nin this shift. Since 2012 the Committee has had an explicit mandate to nominate highly qualified women\, and its nominees enjoy above-average election success (controlling for achievement).\nLooking beyond gender\, we document similar shifts in the premium for geographic diversity: in the mid-2000s\, both the Fellows and the Nominating Committee became significantly more likely to nominate and elect candidates from outside the US. Finally\, we examine gender gaps in several other major awards for US economists. We show that the gaps in the probability of selection of new fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences closely parallel those of the Econometric Society\, with historically negative penalties for women turning to positive premiums in recent years.\n \n
