DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nFabien Moizeau\n(CREM\, Université de Rennes)\n \nLand\, Wealth\, and Taxation\n \nAbstract: This paper examines the role of land in wealth dynamics and taxation policy by focusing on the interplay among agents’ bidding for location\, mortgage market imperfections\, and inheritance. We develop a model in which altruistic agents leave to their heir a voluntary bequest and their housing property\, the value of which is determined by the residential equilibrium. We first show that the borrowing constraint in the mortgage market is a source of symmetry-breaking\, leading an initially homogeneous population to reside in different locations and to split into different wealth classes. When the wealth distribution is heterogeneous\, the borrowing constraint generates spatial wealth sorting\, which translates into persistent inequality: Wealthier agents reside in the most attractive locations and leave a higher inheritance\, while the poorest dynasties are relegated in poverty trap areas. DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\n– Tricentenaire de la naissance d’Adam Smith –\n \nSéminaire\n  \nLaurie Bréban\n(PHARE\, Ecole d’Economie de la Sorbonne) \n  \n« Bonheur et richesse\, Adam Smith face à l’économie du bonheur »\n  \nIl peut paraître surprenant pour un économiste contemporain d’avoir recours à la morale pour apporter des réponses aux questions qu’il se pose. C’est pourtant dans ce domaine que l’on trouve\, au XVIIIesiècle\, et plus particulièrement chez Adam Smith\, des questionnements qui sont devenus des enjeux importants en économie. Les réflexions sur la sensibilité au plaisir et à la douleur\, ou l’analyse des liens entre richesse et bonheur\, autant d’éléments qui intéressent aujourd’hui la discipline\, doivent être recherchées moins dans l’œuvre économique de Smith que dans sa philosophie morale. Nous nous proposons ici de rendre compte de concepts issus de sa philosophie morale\, dans une perspective reconnue aujourd’hui comme une branche de l’économie : l’économie du bonheur. DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire \n  \nAmory Gethin\n (Paris School of Economics)\n \n \nDistributional growth accounting: Education and the reduction of global poverty\, 1980-2022\n  \nAbstract: This article studies the role played by education in the decline of global poverty. In a companion paper\, I estimate that the rise of government redistribution in the form of cash transfers\, education\, healthcare\, and other public services accounts for 30% of worldwide poverty reduction since 1980. In this paper\, I incorporate in this analysis the causal impact of schooling on pretax incomes\, combining survey microdata covering 95% of the world’s population with a simple model of education and the wage structure. Private returns to schooling account for 50-60% of global economic growth\, 60-70% of income gains among the world’s poorest 20% individuals\, and 60-90% of the decline in global gender inequality since 1980. Combining direct redistribution and indirect investment benefits from education brings the contribution of public policies to global poverty reduction to 50-80% or more. \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n \n  \n  \n \n \n  \n
