We introduce the ballot-bag\, a novel technique that relaxes this trade-off by mitigating bias in direct questioning while improving precision over indirect methods. In a field experiment in Egypt\, where direct questions on irregular migration are biased\, ballot-bag estimates closely align with those from a list experiment but exhibit significantly lower variance. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nRita Dias Pereira\nNova (Lisbonne) \n \nIntergenerational Education Persistence: Evidence from Molecular Genetic Data\n \nAbstract: This paper exploits molecular genetic data to quantify genetic confounding in parent-child educational outcomes. We develop a model of the intergenerational transmission of education based on insights from the literature on social science genetics. The model distinguishes between two types of genetic confounding. First\, narrow genetic confounding reflects the direct transmission of genetic predisposition towards education. Second\, broad genetic confounding captures direct genetic transmission as well as genetic nurture\, i.e.\, an influence of parental genes on children’s outcome through the family environment. Next\, we use the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) data to decompose the association between parental years of education and their offspring’s grades on Key Stage 4 national exams. To proxy genetic endowments\, we construct Educational Attainment Polygenic Indices (EA PGIs) for parents and children. To correct for measurement error\, we use Obviously-Related Instrumental Variables (ORIV) based on two independent PGIs. The results suggest that `broad genetic confounding’  explains 30-45% of the parent-child educational association\, and `narrow genetic confounding’ 18-33%. We find no meaningful differences between mothers and fathers. Using our model\, we compare our estimates to twin and adoptee designs\, and show how molecular genetic approaches rely on plausibly weaker assumptions. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nTanguy Bernard\n(Bordeaux Sciences Economiques) \n  \nTraceability in the value chain: The case of certified cocoa in Côte d’Ivoire\n \nAbstract: This paper investigates the traceability of environmentally and socially sustainable (ESS) certified cocoa in Côte d’Ivoire\, the world’s leading cocoa-producing country. Despite ESS certification schemes\, significant information asymmetries persist within the value chain\, leaving room for opportunistic behaviors such as side-sourcing\, i.e. when conventional cocoa is labeled as certified. We explore reporting discrepancies regarding transactions of allegedly certified cocoa\, using survey data from farmers and middlemen\, and administrative data provided by cooperatives. We find large discrepancies between volumes declared by farmers and cooperatives across all cooperatives in our sample\, indicating widespread side-sourcing. Cooperatives report volumes 123% to 870% higher than farmers’ declarations\, while middlemen’s reports closely match farmers’. We further assess the impact of a new digital traceability system (DTS)\, implemented through a randomized controlled trial\, designed to reduce opacity in transactions between farmers and middlemen (and hence\, cooperatives). Despite comprehensive training\, adoption of the system remained minimal\, with less than 3% of transactions digitized in treated sections. Yet\, we find that cooperatives engaged in different misreporting practices in their traceability registers depending on treatment intensity: under low-intensity treatment\, they inflated reported volumes by creating numerous additional\, potentially fraudulent transactions\, whereas under intensive monitoring they shifted toward modifying existing records\, particularly reported volumes. Yet\, little is known about how community leaders and local implementers respond to financial incentives or how group decisions aggregate individual preferences in CBT. We conduct a cluster-randomized experiment in 180 Ethiopian villages to study the effects of incentive structures and discretion on administrative capture—defined as funds retained beyond benchmark implementation costs—in CBT. Local leaders were tasked with allocating real or hypothetical transfer budgets\, with discretion to retain up to 10% as “administrative costs”. We find that financial incentives significantly increase administrative capture\, and that capture increases with budget size. Group decisions yield higher appropriation than individual proposals\, suggesting implicit collusion rather than prosocial restraint in group-based decisions. Moreover\, when real stakes are at play\, group outcomes are disproportionately shaped by extreme (outlier) preferences\, whereas in hypothetical settings\, popular preferences dominate. Evidence from the 15M Movement in Spain\n \nWhat are the long term effects of protests? This paper studies how the level of attendance at simultaneous marches organized by the 15M (the Spanish Occupy movement) impacted electoral behavior and political attitudes in the following decade. Using regional variation in weather shocks as an instrumental variable for the level of attendance at simultaneous marches\, I find that cities with higher attendance  are more concerned about corruption and vote more for left wing and anti-corruption parties and less for far-right parties. Using novel data from Twitter\, I document a higher uptake of social media platforms after an offline protest and a persistent difference in online activity in cities with higher attendance. Using survey data\, I also show a higher electoral effect for people that have a social media account. However\, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here\, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs\, policy support\, information sharing intention\, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59\,440 participants from 63 countries\, the interventions’ effectiveness was small\, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics\, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%)\, policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%)\, information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%)\, and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last\, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors \n  \nThe role of health co-benefits in climate policy support\n[ongoing] \nThis paper investigates whether communicating that carbon pricing not only addresses long-term climate risks but also delivers immediate local public health benefits by reducing toxic air pollutants affects public support for climate policy. As linking insurance to employment contracts is not possible and demand for insurance is too low to sustain voluntary schemes\, alternative approaches are required. One such approach is bundling health insurance with microcredit\, which we evaluate in this study. We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of a compulsory micro-health insurance scheme bundled with microcredit in Ouagadougou\, Burkina Faso. Among the 88 active microcredit groups (44 treated\, 44 control)\, we analyzed outcomes for 1\,095 individuals who reported illness episodes in the six months preceding the endline survey. We evaluated the effects of health insurance subscription on financial protection\, healthcare utilization\, and health outcomes\, estimating both the intention-to-treat effect (ITT) and the local average treatment effect (LATE). Our findings indicate no evidence of selective attrition or members opting out of the Microfinance Institution (MFI) due to the health insurance requirement; loan renewal rates remained consistent across treatment groups. Health insurance substantially and positively impacted financial protection: out-of-pocket expenditures decreased by over 50%\, and payment difficulties dropped by approximately 36%. The insurance also influenced healthcare-seeking behaviors\, with a marginally significant increase in modern healthcare facility use (+5%)\, a significant reduction in traditional medicine use (-61%)\, and improved timely care-seeking\, as more individuals sought care on the same day symptoms appeared (+23%). However\, no significant impact on physical or psychological health outcomes was observed. These results suggest that compulsory health insurance can provide meaningful financial protection against health risks for MFI members who lack social protection\, without compromising the MFI’s retention rate. This study aims to link these two issues and evaluate the role of inequality of opportunity in income poverty among the working-age population. Inequality of opportunity is assessed both in absolute and relative terms\, and at varying levels of income poverty threshold. It is also examined whether inequality of opportunity is lower among those in (full-time) work to assess the role of employment in reducing unfair inequalities. For this purpose\, 2019 wave of cross-sectional EU-SILC dataset on intergenerational transmission of disadvantages is employed. C’est la question que pose notre article\, à partir d’une enquête originale\, mêlant matériaux qualitatifs et quantitatifs\, portant sur les usages des plateformes numériques chez les agriculteurs en France (Projet ANR PADAC). Dans la continuité des travaux de Thelen et Culpepper (2020)\, nous questionnons l’existence d’un permissive consensus\, c’est à dire un accord tacite entre la plateforme et ses usagers afin de faire pression sur les pouvoirs publics\, à la base de ce que Thelen et Culpepper appellent le « pouvoir de plateforme ». \nLe cas du secteur agricole français se prête bien à une étude de ce type : d’une part car les initiatives de plateformes sont nombreuses à émerger récemment dans le secteur (plateformes de financement\, d’achat de matériel\, de recrutement\, de conseil\, etc.) malgré l’existence d’institutions historiquement fortes remplissant déjà les mêmes fonctions (CUMA\, syndicats\, chambres d’agriculture\, etc.)  ; d’autre part car les agriculteurs ont un profil intéressant\, à la fois consommateurs finaux et professionnels\, se situant souvent sur les deux faces des plateformes. Nous nous focalisons dans cette étude sur les plateformes d’achat/vente de matériel (tracteurs\, petit équipement\, etc.)\, dont la configuration de marché est aujourd’hui particulière : un acteur emblématique du capitalisme de plateforme (possédant aussi\, entre autres\, le site Ebay) domine le marché mais une plateformes créée par et pour les agriculteurs résiste. Là où les théories standards prévoiraient une situation de type winner takes all ou un raccordement multiple\, nos données montrent qu’environ un tiers des agriculteurs enquêtés utilisent exclusivement la plateforme créée par les agriculteurs. Nos analyses montrent que le fait d’être intégré dans les institutions historiques du secteur (avoir ou avoir eu un mandat dans ces organisations) est associé à une probabilité plus élevée d’utiliser uniquement cette plateforme concurrente\, ce que nous pouvons caractériser comme une forme de résistance à la pénétration d’acteurs extérieurs au secteur. Nous montrons toutefois que lorsque les incitations économiques à utiliser la plateforme dominante sont trop fortes\, cette résistance tend à disparaître. We match bird observations from the French Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) to parcel level information on agricultural land use and type of crops. We exploit the heterogeneous exposure of bird observation sites to the reform depending on their ex-ante extent of arable area in a continuous difference-in-differences approach. We find evidence of an increase in overall bird abundance after 2015 in sites with a higher ex-ante proportion of arable land\, driven by a small number of generalist species\, and no impact on species richness and phylogenetic diversity. A decomposition by diet type suggests that vertebrate eaters were positively impacted by the reform. By contrast\, cropland species experienced the most dramatic decline after 2015 in sites with a higher share of arable area. The design includes a cash transfer pro- gram (T1)\, T1 plus animal transfer (T2) and T2 plus a nutrition- focused program (T3). We find that the program reduces extreme poverty in all treatment branches\, but only T3 positively impacts child nutrition and anthropometrics measures. Besides\, only the T3 branch impacts motor and cognitive development of new born children. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nSébastien Desbureaux\n(INRAE) \n  \nKeeping Gorillas in the Mist: The Environmental Economics of Accelerating the Adoption of Clean Cooking\n  \nAbstract: Wood fuel remains the main cooking fuel for one third of humanity\, with important negative consequences for forests\, wildlife\, and climate change. As access to electricity is steadily increasing\, our randomized control trial (n=1500) asks whether new generations of efficient cookers can be promoted\, studies the impact of adopting them\, and mechanisms to promote their adoption. The study takes place in the rapidly growing city of Goma\, Democratic Republic of the Congo\, where charcoal consumption threatens the protected habitats of thousands of species living in Virunga National Park\, including Mountain Gorillas. Our results show that fully subsidizing the initial purchase of an Electric Pressure Cooker (80$)  to the clients of an electricity providers leads to a triple win: $360 savings on cooking for households;  $115 extra earnings from electricity consumption for the electricity provider; 7.5tCO2eq reduced over the 5-year EPC life span per cooker;  and 1 ha of forest saved for each 29 cookers distributed. We further find that subsidizing electricity price and environmental messaging campaigns targeting users further increases usage of the cooker. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nFrancesca Artioli\n(UPEC-UGE\, Ecole d’Urbanisme de Paris) \n  \nLogement et capitalisme de plateforme : les conflits autour de la régulation des locations de courte durée dans les villes européennes\n  \nFrancesca Artioli présentera les résultats d’une recherche collective sur la régulation des locations de courte durée dans les grandes villes européennes\, conduite avec Thomas Aguilera (Sciences Po Rennes) et Claire Colomb (University of Cambridge). \n  \nQuinze ans après la naissance d’Airbnb en Californie en 2008\, la plupart des grandes villes du monde ont connu des conflits autour de la réglementation de ce que l’on appelle désormais les locations de courte durée\, soupçonnées d’exacerber les effets du « surtourisme » et de retirer des logements permanents pour les dédier à l’usage exclusif des visiteurs. Depuis le milieu des années 2010\, les villes européennes\, l’un des plus grands marchés touristiques du monde\, ont été au cœur de ces conflits\, poussant souvent les gouvernements urbains à prendre position et à adopter des mesures pour réglementer le phénomène. Pourtant\, ce qui frappe\, c’est la diversité des formes prises par ces conflits et des modes de régulation qui ont été adoptés. Partant de ce constat\, et adoptant une perspective qui combine une sociologie de gouvernance urbaine multi-niveaux\, des politiques publiques et de l’économie politique du capitalisme urbain\, cette recherche vise à expliquer comment et pourquoi les gouvernements locaux – confrontés à un même phénomène global – ont adopté des modes de régulation différents ; comment ces régulations ont été mises en œuvre ; et explique les effets socio-politiques de ces régulations sur l’économie politique des villes. \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 3 / BSE –\n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nSteeve Stillman\n(Free University of Bozen-Bolzanoi) \n  \nStrategic Use of Social Media by Political Parties: Evidence from Italy\n  \nWe investigate how politicians in Italy strategically use news events and political communication to increase their support in the electorate. Using machine-learning techniques\, we extract events about immigration and the economy from newswires. We then test a causal chain connecting events\, online political communication\, salience of particular cleavages\, and support for parties measured with individual voting intentions data\, with a specific focus on communication by populist anti-immigration politicians. We identify the impact of communication on polls by leveraging high-frequency communication data and variation in the 4G exposure of Italian municipalities as a shock to the accessibility of political communication online. In addition\, we measure the relevance of such effects in explaining support for parties by calibrating a structural model of political competition informed by the relationships uncovered by our reduced-form analysis. We use the model to evaluate (i) a counterfactual scenario where political parties compete in the absence of communication events\, and (ii) where parties cannot affect migration salience with communication. DESCRIPTION: \nSéminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nMarie Boltz\n(Université de Strasbourg) \n  \nBridging the Gap: Misperceived gender norms and intra-household demand for flexibility at work in Colombia\ncowritten with Ana Maria Diaz and Luz Magdelana Salas\n \nThis paper examines the influence of gender norms on work-family balance and the gender gap in labor force participation\, with a specific focus on the role of flexibility in working arrangements. We investigate how these norms are sustained within households and explore the decision-making process surrounding the willingness to accept flexible jobs. We propose a study design that combines survey data and a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to capture couples’ beliefs and preferences regarding flexible working arrangements at the couple level. DESCRIPTION: \nSéminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nPedro Vicente\nNovafrica (Lisbonne) \n  \nCountering Violence and Islamic Radicalization amid an Armed Insurgency\nAbstract: Islamic radicalization is one of the main correlates of violent conflict in the world today with important implications in Sub-Saharan Africa. We ask whether Islamic radicalization and related violence can be countered through campaigning by local religious organizations. We follow a campaign against violence in the province of Cabo Delgado\, Mozambique\, a setting that has seen a recent violent insurgency. The campaign focused on the key message that religion is not violent. It was broadcasted through community radios and individual voice messages sent to cell phones. We measure the impact of the campaign on violent events\, various behavioral measures including anti-social behavior and trust\, as well as survey attitudes. We find that the campaign decreased the incidence of violent events in the province. In addition\, although it decreased radical attitudes\, it also increased fear.
