Our framework models forward-looking students whose field choice determines their comparative advantage across occupations and their ability to adjust to shocks.  Using Danish administrative data\, we estimate key parameters while accounting for unobserved heterogeneity in both student preferences and worker skills\, addressing selection into fields and occupations. We use the model to evaluate how varying degrees of educational flexibility affect the labor market consequences of large economic shocks.  Allowing students to reallocate fields increases individual income gains\, with substantially larger gains when capacity constraints are removed. As flexibility rises\, income losses become increasingly concentrated among high earners\, while more lower-income individuals tend to benefit—raising average returns and improving the distributional resilience of the labor market. \n\n \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\nDela-Dem Doe Fiankor\n(University of Göttingen)\n  \n Pesticide Regulatory Heterogeneity\, Foreign Sourcing\, and Global Agricultural Value Chains\nAbstractRegulations on the production and consumption of goods are very heterogeneous across countries. Whereas the effects of regulations on exports are well known\, the responses of importers to heterogeneous and frequently changing country-specific regulations are not well understood. We combine Swiss firm-level import customs transaction data with country-product-year-specific maximum residue limits to investigate the effect of pesticide regulatory heterogeneity on firm- level imports and assess the moderating role of firm size and global value chain participation. Relying on a global sourcing model\, we find that regulatory heterogeneity reduces imports butless so in larger\, and diversified firms. Participating in global value chains also improves firms’ flexibility toward heterogeneous regulation. Business diversification—while reducing the gains from trade and scale—could help firms cope with heterogeneous international regulations. \n \n>> Salle H1-102 (bât. In France\, energy labels include information on energy efficiency (EE) through a score expressed in kWhep/m2/year\, which is mapped onto color-coded rating bands (A-G). The arbitrary changes in the definition of these rating bands introduced by the 2021 French reform allow us to apply a difference-in-differences strategy to estimate the causal impact of a letter change on housing prices. Applying this strategy to 1.5 million property transaction between 2013 and 2023\, we provide strong evidence that buyers’ decision-making is significantly influenced by simplified information\, such as letter grades. We also provide evidence of the influence of letters on seller behavior.\n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \nAgenda > Tous les événements\n

Evidence from the Birth of the Welfare State\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe emergence of social insurance programs in Europe at the end of the 19th century laid the foundations of the welfare state. This coincided with an unprecedented wave of democratization\, including the expansion of the voting franchise and the formation of political parties. We provide new evidence supporting that a stable party system\, by extending governments’ time horizon and enhancing coordination capacity\, is a crucial condition for suffrage expansion to lead to large-scale redistributive programs. We exploit the staggered lifting of economic restrictions on the male franchise in Western European countries\, as well as a novel dataset on party stability since the early 19th century. Our findings shed light on an important puzzle regarding the absence of systematic redistribution observed after democratization. \n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n  \n

We provide a model of an open economy with heterogeneous firms and nominal rigidities where foreign tariff shocks induce a sluggish adjustment in the labor market between domestic and exporter firms\, giving an incentive for the monetary authority to intervene. We find that the dispersion of firm productivity determines the degree of the monetary policy response to external tariff shocks. We corroborate our theoretical findings by providing empirical evidence on the response of domestic monetary policy to foreign tariff shocks using data on Global Antidumping from the U.S.\n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n  \n  \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n\n \n\nMiren Lafourcade\nUniversité Paris-Saclay\, RITM\, PSE\, CEPR \n\n \n\n « Place-Based Policies: Opportunity for Deprived Schools or Zone-and-Shame Effect? »\nco-écrit avec Manon Garrouste (Université Paris-Saclay)\n \n \nAbstract: Place-based policies that allocate public resources to low-income neighborhoods inadvertently also designate areas needing assistance\, which may\, in turn\, create or reinforce neighborhood stigma. This paper investigates this trade-off through the lens of school enrollment. We leverage the quasi-experimental design provided by a French reform that changed the delineation of subsidized neighborhoods based on a sharp poverty cut-off. Using a difference-in-differences approach\,  we find strong evidence of neighborhood stigma arising from policy designation\, as public middle schools located in designated areas witnessed a significant decrease in pupil enrollment post-reform compared to counterfactual schools in undesignated areas above the poverty threshold. This « zone-and-shame » effect is immediate; it persists up to five years after the reform\, and it is triggered by the reactions of parents from all socioeconomic backgrounds. While upper and middle-class families have shifted to the public sector\, less affluent families have opted for public middle schools outside the designated areas. We uncover weak evidence of stigma reversion after an area loses its designation\, suggesting hysteresis in bad reputations conveyed by policy labeling. \n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nAgenda > Tous les événements\n  \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

In an era of high financial integration\, we investigate the relationship between the real exchange rate and international reserves using nonlinear regressions and panel threshold regressions over 110 countries from 2001 to 2020. Our study shows the level of financial-institution development plays an essential role in explaining the buffer effect of international reserves. Countries with a low development of their financial institutions may manage the international reserves as a shield to deal with the negative consequences of terms-of-trade shocks on the real exchange rate. We also find the buffer effect is stronger in countries with intermediate levels of financial openness. \n  \n  \n  \n\n> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n\n  \nAgenda > Tous les événements\n \n \n  \n

Using newly introduced methods and specifications\, we find that investment sensitivity to real estate prices decreases with firm size: The smallest firms are at least three times more responsive to changes in collateral value compared to the largest firms. We impute these estimates onto other countries where available data lack firm-level detail. This approach allows us to assess the aggregate sensitivity of investment to real estate prices across different countries. Our results indicate significant variation in the sensitivity of aggregate investment to real estate shocks\, driven by cross-country differences in the size distribution of firms. \n  \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

To understand why and how\, we use a novel micro-level dataset of 6\,247 robo-advisor clients who made 9\,250 changes to their investment portfolios between 2015 and 2022. Micro-level demographic and financial variables as well as macro-level market returns and volatility are factors in the decision to change one’s passively managed portfolio. In addition\, how these changes affected investors’ returns are studied. A counterfactual test showed that on average accounts which adjusted their portfolio allocation outperformed identical hypothetical accounts in which no changes were made\, but this result was not replicated in the field using a more constrained dataset including only realized gains (i.e.\, closed accounts). \n\n  \n \n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

We use the introduction of direct airlines connections between Chinese localities and international countries as an exogenous source of change in face-to-face interactions over the period 1992-2019. Our difference-in-difference results show the introduction of a direct weekly flight between a Chinese province and an international country raises trade by 5%. The impact is consistently more pronounced in the 1990s\, where other nonpersonal means of information transmission was less developed and for products with higher face-to-face communication requirements. The positive effect on trade is also greater for products that are more intensive in face-to-face interactions suggesting the importance of informational barriers to trade. \n  \n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nSéminaire BSE – programme 4 \n  \nAntoine Pietri\n(CEE\, Université de Montpellier) \n \n \n\n« Tullock contESSt in the lab »\nGuillaume Cheikbossian (CEE-M\, Univ Montpellier) et Antoine Pietri (CEE-M\, Univ Montpellier)\n\n \n \n \n\nAbstract : This project aims at understanding whether individuals are affected by evolutionary forces when making decisions in a two-player Tullock contest. Indeed\, the experimental literature shows that contestants almost systematically invest more effort in the contest than predicted by the Nash equilibrium. One possible explanation is that there are evolutionary forces that induce people to beat the others\, resulting in overbidding compared to the Nash prediction. However\, testing the predictions of evolutionary game theory requires a very long-time horizon\, which is very difficult to implement in the lab. Therefore\, we propose an experimental design that — we believe — can help us to understand if evolutionary forces impact participants’ decisions. To do so\, we start from the « evolutionary » vision in which an equilibrium is evolutionary stable if the introduction of a new strategy (called mutant strategy) into a finite population does not change the equilibrium of the game. Thus\, we expose participants of a traditional two-player contest experiment to mutant\, i.e. some of them  have their decision dictated by the experimenter. Observing the reaction of participants to the invasion of « mutants » allows us to understand how evolutionary forces influence the decision-making process of individuals. Our results — prudently —  point that the concept of evolutionary stable strategy is not a potential justification for the fact that subjects in a two-player contest experiment tend to invest too much effort in the contest\, compared to the Nash equilibrium prediction. We believe that this non-significant result adds insight to the literature.\n\n  \n  \n \n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire programme 4 – BSE\n\n \n\nIsabelle Salle\n(University of Ottawa) \n  \n« Lifetime memories of inflation : evidence from surveys and the lab  »\n  \nAbstract: We study how individuals’ memories of inflation shape their expectations about future inflation using both surveys and laboratory experiments. Recalling having lived through prior disinflations has pronounced effects on how long-lived people expect the current inflation episode to be. Information treatments though games in which people experience with prior disinflationary episodes similarly strongly reduce inflation expectations of individuals on average and are often recalled as inflation memories months later. We also show that when people forecast inflation in the lab\, the inflation dynamics in the game can affect their beliefs much like the inflation experienced in real life. Methodologically\, we contrast surveys and lab experiments and discuss the pros and cons of each method\, emphasizing the general consistency across the two methodologies. \n \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n  \n \n \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire: Etienne Lepers (OCDE)
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 4\n  \nEtienne Lepers\n(OCDE) \n  \nWhat Drives Capital to Green Companies in Emerging Markets: Evidence from Investment Funds\n  \nLeveraging on a detailed portfolio-level dataset of the largest 37 000 investment funds in the world\, this paper explores the role of investment funds in financing green companies in Emerging Markets (EMs) and allocation drivers. First\, the paper demonstrates that despite a boom in “sustainable” investing at the global level\, companies involved in carbon solutions (renewable energy\, transport and infrastructure)\, and particularly so in EMs\, represent a very small fraction of reported “sustainable” investment. Second\, fund-level and asset-level regressions highlight several important fund and country characteristics as drivers of green investments. Younger funds\, retail investor funds\, funds with domestic mandates\, and sustainable funds are more likely to invest in green companies and respectively less likely to invest in fossil fuel companies. We demonstrate the importance for EM green companies to be included into EM benchmarks\, while listed firms’ concentration of ownership is negatively associated with green investments. Greater green allocation in EMs is also associated with higher portfolio flows openness\, and more economic freedom. In addition\, several climate-related drivers such as exports in renewable manufacturing products or a country’s share in energy generation are also positively associated with higher allocation. \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n  \nAgenda > Tous les événements\n \n \n \n  \n

Nevertheless\, banks are expected to support the recovery. This study investigates which effect dominates by exploring how typhoons affect the lending activities of banks in China. It relies on the exposure of more than 161\,000 bank branches held by 327 Chinese banks over the period from 2004 to 2019. Our difference-in-difference estimates reveal that\, on average\, typhoons trigger a decrease in lending that accounts for 2.8 percent of total bank assets. This decline comes from commercial banks. On the contrary\, rural banks act as shock absorbers. This may be the consequence of long-term lending relationships and banks’ better knowledge of local economic and physical risks. The absence of rural banks is even found to be detrimental to local post-typhoon growth. Last\, government ownership and external political pressure mitigate the relative decline in lending by typhoon-hit commercial banks.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n>> pour assister au séminaire sur ZOOM\, contactez  julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr\n \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION: \nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \n\n \n\nCorentin Roussel\n(Univ. Strasbourg) \n  \n » Should new prudential regulation discriminate green credit risk ? A macrofinancial study for the Output Floor case »\n  \n\n\n\nDifferentiated treatment of green credit risk in banks’ capital requirements to favor green transition generates lot of debates among European prudential regulators. The aim of this paper is to examine whether the key Basel 3 finalization instrument – the Output Floor – should be applied to green credit risk in order to ensure stability of banking system and promote green finance. To do so\, we assess macrofinancial and environmental benefits of such green policy for the Euro Area through the lens of a general equilibrium model. We get three main results. First\, when banks get transitory ’environmental awareness’\, an Output Floor (OF) applied to brown credits only (i.e. a brown OF) faces a trade-off between limiting environmental aftermaths and reaching OF objectives (i.e reducing volatility of banks’ capital adequacy ratio). Second\, to mitigate the prudential cost of this trade-off\, brown OF should be joined with additional green financial policies such as green Quantitative Easing. Third\, pollutant emissions tax erodes brown OF efficiency along financial and economic cycles but limits the welfare cost implied by pollution in the long run. \n\n\n\n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n \n \n \n– Voir plus d’événements –\n  \n

We first study changes in media reportings on migration\, in terms of salience and tone. Second\, we assess by how much they matter in voting outcomes. We use natural language processing (NLP) methods to analyze French news articles about immigration before and after successive waves of terrorist attacks. We find that during 3 to 8 weeks after a significant attack\, a shift of around 30-50% in both the intensity and net negative tone of reporting about migration is clearly observed. These effects happen to be robust across French media political orientations. We also find that during a nationwide election in France that happens to take place\, incidently\, 3 weeks after the Bataclan November 13th attack\, votes in favor of the main anti-migrant party were higher in municipalities which were more exposed to media adopting negative tones.\n  \n\n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

Investors are reeling\, tax collections are below projections\, and people are pointing fingers. On the business side\, companies have shut down\, farms have failed\, workers have lost their jobs\, and consumers face high prices. Why has legal weed failed to deliver on many of its promises? \nThis general survey presentation gives a broad and accessible overview of the problems faced by the legal weed industry in the many states that have embarked upon various forms of the legalization experiment. The idea is to take on the euphoric claims about cannabis markets with straight dope and a full dose of economic reality. \nThis is not a technical paper\, but rather a frank\, fact-filled\, entertaining presentation aimed at a general audience of agricultural economists across fields who may not have any exposure to the legal cannabis industry but may be interested in its progress\, future potential\, and ability to contribute to local and national economic production and become a bona fide part of agricultural economics. \nIn this presentation\, I offer the unadulterated facts about the new legal segment of one of the world’s oldest industries. I offer a summary of the main questions\, analyses\, and conclusion in my recently published book on cannabis economics\, co-authored with Daniel Sumner\, entitled “Can Legal Weed Win?” (University of California Press\, 2022). \nI draw upon data and anecdotes from our own experience working with California cannabis regulators since 2016. I explain why many cannabis businesses and some aspects of legalization fail to measure up\, while others occasionally get it right. \nThe stories I tell stretch from before America’s first medical weed dispensaries opened in 1996 through the short-term boom in legal consumption that happened during COVID-19 lockdowns. The presentation is peppered with unexpected insights about how cannabis markets can thrive\, how regulators get the laws right or wrong\, and what might happen to legal and illegal cannabis markets going forward. \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n \n \n  \n

We tackle this question from the soy exports perspective. Indeed\, conversion from forests to soy-producing areas is a major driver of deforestation. Using disaggregated exports data at the municipality – exporter – destination and year level in Brazil\, we estimate whether changes in foreign demand are related to soy exports and in fine to soy-related deforestation. On the one hand\, we estimate an average micro-level elasticity of soy exports to foreign demand of around 0.2 across specifications. On the other hand\, we document that the average response above hides significant heterogeneities across locations and exporters. Third\, relying on these results\, we quantify the effects of a foreign demand negative shock on soy-related deforestation.\n \n\n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

This paper estimates the causal effect of access to the railroad network on intergenerational mobility in nineteenth-century England and Wales. By linking individuals across the five full-population censuses from 1851 to 1911\, and geolocating addresses\, we determine how proximity to the nearest train station affected the occupation mobility between fathers and sons. We address the endogeneity in proximity to train stations by leveraging the as-good-as-random opening of built and planned train stations. We find that sons who grew up approximately 5 km closer to a train station were 2% more likely to work in a different occupation than their father and 6% more likely to be upwardly mobile. The majority of the effects are driven by changes in local labor opportunities. \n\n\n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 1 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n

The analysis is based on the structural estimation of a model of learning from prices. The estimation yields two empirical measures of uncertainty: uncertainty about option values and strategic uncertainty about competitors’ valuations. The main contribution of the consensus prices is to reduce strategic uncertainty\, especially in the most opaque segments of the options market. The results stress the importance of pricing benchmarks for aggregating dispersed information and creating a shared understanding of market conditions in opaque market structures. \n\n  \n  \n– Séminaire organisé par le programme 4 / BSE –\n \n  \n>> pour assister au séminaire via Zoom\, contacter julie.vissaguet@u-bordeaux.fr \n \n \n  \n
