DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nAntoine BOUET\n(GREThA)\n« Plurilateral agreements: a promising trade liberalization modality?« \nAbstract \nIn this paper we evaluate the opportunities given by plurilateral agreements (or plurilaterals) in terms of concluding trade liberalization agreements and study the characteristics of “agreeable” plurilaterals: inclusive or exclusive agreements\, i.e. inclusion or not of an MFN clause\, inclusion of specific trading partners\, of specific sectors. We first design a theoretical model of international trade with four countries and four goods\, where countries have implemented import duties based on terms-of-trade externalities\, to identify the mechanisms by which these types of trade agreement affect members and non-members. Second\, we use a static version of a multi-region multi-sector Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model to evaluate the welfare consequences of 64\,770 potential plurilaterals to estimate the number of “agreeable” deals\, first because they increase members’ welfare\, second because either they are inclusive\, or they are exclusive and do not decrease non-members’ welfare. We conclude that the addition of an MFN clause tends to decrease members’ welfare and increase non-members’ welfare. “Agreeable” plurilaterals tend to include the European Union and to cover liberalization of capital goods while they tend to exclude Sub-Saharan Africa and agriculture. DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nErica Perego\n (CEPII)\n \n « Macroeconomic adjustment in commodity producing countries with limited access to financial markets : the role of storage »\n« Macroeconomic volatility is a fundamental concern for developing countries\, in particular for com-modity exporters. In this paper we look at the macroeconomic adjustments of small open economies that produce a storable commodity to changes in the foreign interest rate. When a commodity is storable a shock in international financial markets not only has an impact via the interest rate channel but also via the price of the commodity. This additional channel comes from the fact that storable commodity prices react to changes in world interest rates as a result of investment decisions in inter-national financial markets. We extend the previous literature by including the storage mechanism in a standard model for a small low-income primary-exporter economy. We show that when commodity prices are allowed to respond endogenously to muted investment situations\, the dynamics of the econ-omy are importantly amplified both under a flexible and a fixed exchange rate regime. Targeting the export price in such framework is not assuring full stabilization either. Therefore the extended model provides new insights on the macroeconomic adjustments of primary-commodity-exporting economies and calls for a reassessment of the corresponding policy prescriptions.. » \n

Evidence from MENA countries at the Dawn of Revolutions »\nThe analysis of individual religious beliefs and behaviours is crucial since it allows to shed light on the current major social debates on terrorism\, nuclear development and political Islam\, that are all likely to have significant economic consequences. In several countries around the world\, the coexistence of religions as well as the degree of religiosity merit greater attention. This article gives evidence for one of the most challenging region\, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)\, where religious minorities live under the rule of Islam and where at first sight atheism seems nonexistent and religiosity high. \nFor almost a decade now\, several MENA countries are facing the repercussions of the Arab Spring. Overall\, Arab revolutions rised in response to a long history in fail in democracy\, to corruption and to lack of material conditions that gave rise to Islamist movements and aggravate the socio-economic precariousness of young and poor population. As things stand\, MENA countries are facing widespread mistrust and a decline in social capital affecting democratic life and economic performance. In this article\, the focus is on the effects of the degree of religiosity and the assimilation of individuals to religious groups on the stock of social capital. We consider religiosity as a multidimensional construct. We use data for nine MENA countries from the World Value Survey over the period 2010-2014. The empirical analysis of the impact of religiosity on trust supports the existence of a multifaceted impact of religiosity\, some dimensions having no impact\, others having a positive or a negative impact.
