SUMMARY:Séminaire d'Economie: Robert Veszteg
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nRobert Veszteg\nWaseda University\, Tokyo\n \nStrategy-proofness in experimental matching markets (joint work with Pablo Guillen)\nWe introduce two novel matching mechanisms\, Reverse Top Trading Cycles (RTTC) and Reverse Deferred Acceptance (RDA)\, with the purpose of challenging the idea that the theoretical property of strategy-proofness induces high rates of truth-telling in economic experiments. RTTC and RDA are identical to the celebrated Top Trading Cycles (TTC) and Deferred Acceptance (DA) mechanisms\, respectively\, in all their theoretical properties except that their dominant-strategy equilibrium is to report one’s preferences in the order opposite to the way they were induced. With the focal truth-telling strategy being out of equilibrium\, we are able to perform a clear measurement of how much of the truth-telling reported for strategy-proof mechanisms is compatible with rational behavior and how much of it is caused by confused decision-makers following a default\, very focal strategy\, without understanding the structure of the game. In a school-allocation setting\, we find that roughly half of the observed truth-telling under TTC and DA is the result of naïve (non-strategic) behavior. Only 13-29% of participants’ actions in RTTC and RDA are compatible with rational behavior. Further than that\, by looking at the responses of those seemingly rational participants in control tasks\, it becomes clear that even them lack a basic understanding of the game incentives. We argue that the use of a default option\, confusion and other behavioral biases account for the vast majority of truthful play in both TTC and DA in laboratory experiments.

SUMMARY:Séminaire d'Economie: Stéphane Dèes
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nStéphane Dèes \nBanque de France & Larefi\n \n« The Global Financial Cycle and US Monetary Policy in an Interconnected World »\n \nAbstractWe assess the international spillovers of US monetary policy with a large-scale global VAR which models the world economy as a network of interdependent coun-tries. An expansionary US monetary policy shock contributes to the emergence of a Global Financial Cycle\, which boosts macroeconomic activity worldwide. Against predictions of the Mundellian trilemma\, we also find that economies with floating exchange rate regimes are not insulated from US monetary policy shocks. The role of US monetary policy in driving these macro-financial spillovers gets even rein-forced by the complex network of interactions across countries\, to the extent that network e˙ects roughly double the direct impacts of US monetary policy surprises on international equity prices\, capital flows\, and global growth. This amplifica-tion increases as countries get more globally integrated over time\, suggesting that the evolving network is an important driver for the increasing role of US monetary policy in shaping the Global Financial Cycle.

SUMMARY:Lunch séminaire programme 1: Arthur Silve
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nInvité: Arthur Silve (Université de Laval\, Québec)\n\n\n\n\n« The political economy of innovation »\nAbstract : In this paper\, we propose a theoretical framework to unify strategic responses of the elite to an innovation that has the potential of disrupting existing channels of political control. The elite has three motives: rent-seeking\, factor-price manipulation\, and staying in power. It has several policy options: appropriation\, dissipation of the rents\, blocking the innovation\, or permitting it and sharing the rents with the innovators. The choice of policy depends on four structural features of the innovation: complementarities with existing assets\, mobility (and ease to conceal)\, replicability\, and economies of scale. We also explore political outcomes\, such as political competition and regime change\, and institutional outcomes\, in particular investment or disinvestment in state capacity. \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire d'Economie: Carlos Serrano
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements \n\nCarlos Serrano (UPF and Barcelona GSE)\n « Information Disclosure and the Market for Acquiring Technology Companies » (with George Chondrakis and Rosemarie Ziedonis) \nABSTRACT: The market for acquiring technology-intensive companies is rife with information frictions and valuation challenges. Although such frictions can stifle trading activity\, they also provide room for strategic gain. We investigate this dual role of information frictions in takeover markets by exploiting an institutional reform that released technological information in U.S. patent applications to the public domain. Leveraging cross-sectoral variation in the magnitude of new information disclosure\, we find that greater disclosure leads to an uptick in acquisitions. In line with predictions from strategic factor market theory\, however\, we find that acquirers profit less\, especially when target firms are private. This evidence is consistent with the view that information disclosure facilitates trade in takeover markets yet has a leveling effect on the returns to acquirers. \nLire le papier \n \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire d'Economie 26/11: Luc DOYEN
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\nLuc DOYEN\n(GREThA CNRS)\nHow risk averse policies foster ecological-economic sustainability in mixed fisheries\nAbstract: This paper examines the role of risk aversion on the sustainable management of mixed fisheries. We consider a bio-economic model of multiple species harvested by a single fleet with uncertain costs of effort. We assume that the regulatory agency aims at reaching MMEY (Multi-species Maximum Economic Yield) by maximizing the expected utility of total profits\, where the utility function captures risk aversion. We show analytically that such a risk-averse MMEY mitigates the risk of biological and economic overexploitation of the different species. It further enhances biodiversity in the sense of evenness within the portfolio of the fishery. However risk aversion also lessens the expected profit and food production. Thus\, risk aversion implies a trade-off between different bio-economic goals. These findings are illustrated with the case study of the Australian South East Fishery\, where small risk aversion levels allow for high global bio-economic performances and balanced management objectives\, therefore fostering sustainability. \n
