SUMMARY:Séminaire d'Economie 3/12: Valentina Di Iasio & Ernest Miguelez
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements
Valentina Di Iasio (DiECO Università degli Studi dell’Insubria\, Varese)
& Ernest Miguelez (GREThA – CNRS)

« The ties that bind…and transform: knowledge remittances\, relatedness and the direction of technical change »
Abstract:This study investigates whether the existence of a high-skilled diaspora has a positive impact on the technological diversifi\u000Ccation of the countries of origin. Speci\u000Cfically\, we analyze the role of emigrant inventors as vectors of knowledge remittances. We focus on a sample of 137 countries of origin\, with a special attention to developing countries\, and 5 countries of destination: United States\, Germany\, Switzerland\, United Kingdom and France. To take into account the uneven distribution of knowledge within destination countries we break down the analysis at the metropolitan area level. We also analyze how knowledge remittances and relatedness density interplay in shaping the diversi\u000Ccation path of migrants’ home countries. Our results suggest that the inventors’ diaspora exposes the countries of origin to new technologies and has a positive effect on technological diversi\u000Ccation. The results particularly hold for technologies with lower degrees of relatedness density and for developing countries\, suggesting a positive role oh high-skilled diaspora in helping developing economies to access foreign knowledge and prevent technological lock-in.

SUMMARY:Lunch séminaire programme 1: Matteo Tubiana
DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements
Invité: Matteo Tubiana (Université de Turin)
« Skill Gap\, Mismatch\, and the Dynamics of Italian Companies’ Productivity »
Abstract: « Relying on a unique integrated database\, this work explores the relationship between labour productivity\, on one side; intensity and characteristics of companies’ skills need and degree of skill mismatch\, on the other. The analysis focuses on a representative sample of Italian limited liability companies observed during the years 2012\, 2014 and 2017. It emerges that companies acknowledging the need to update their knowledge base display a higher productivity vis-à-vis other firms. When it comes to the skill need qualified by competence/knowledge domains (management\, STEM\, social and soft skills\, technical operatives and humanities) it appears that companies looking for technical operative and social skills show lower labour productivity as compared to other firms. On the contrary\, companies characterized by a need in managerial\, STEM or humanities-related skills show higher productivity. Finally\, the ability to match the skill need via new hiring is always positively correlated with firms’ productivity. These analysis are corroborated with a number of different econometric specification\, controlling for sample selections\, for the amount of training on the job and subsetting firms according to sectorial characteristics. »
