We use two sources of data. First we combine Demographic Health Surveys with mine permit locations nation-wide. Second we collected first-hand data on households and nearby artisanal gold mines in the central west region. We exploit the exogenous opening and location of gold mines in space (due to the geological conditions) and in time (due to a gold price boom after 2006) to identify the effects of the exposure to ASM on schooling. We find a significant\, robust and strong negative effect of ASM on schooling\, for boys in particular. We unpack the mechanisms related to income\, child labor\, labor substitution\, and expectations regarding the returns to education. We find support for the two latter mechanisms for explaining the negative impact on education. DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\n \nSéminaire BSE / programme 3\n  \nClaire Gondard-Delcroix \n(BSE)\n  \n\nLe projet de recherche Protect (Protection sociale à Madagascar): un projet de recherche inter-disciplinaire et en partenariat à Madagascar\n \nDans un contexte où l’aide internationale au développement est largement repensée au prisme de la protection sociale\, comment évoluent les systèmes nationaux de protection sociale en Afrique sub-saharienne? Le projet de recherche Protect (Protection sociale à Madagascar\, 2017-2023) s’empare de cette question dans le cas de Madagascar\, pays sous régime d’aide\, parmi les plus pauvres de la planète. Pour ce faire\, il propose un dispositif analytique\, empirique et partenarial original caractérisé par : (i) un partenariat de recherche équitable à Madagascar; (ii) une démarche multiscalaire\, considérant les différentes arènes de la protection sociale\, internationale\, nationale et locale; (iii) une démarche en méthodes mixtes et interdisciplinaire; (iv) la production d’outils d’observation originaux pour capter la diversité des formes de protection sociale au niveau des systèmes nationaux (enquête sociométrique sur le réseau national de protection sociale) et locaux de protection sociale (enquêtes ménages-réseaux et film de recherche). DESCRIPTION:Agenda > Tous les événements\n \nSéminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \n \nIsabelle Chort et Berk Oktem \n(UPPA)\n  \nAgricultural Shocks\, Coping Policies and Deforestation: Evidence from the Coffee Leaf Rust Epidemic in Mexico \n\nDeforestation in the tropics is a critical issue that interacts with global environmental changes\, and the mediating role of negative agricultural shocks is ambiguous. We investigate the impact of the massive epidemic of coffee leaf rust (CLR) that affected Central America from 2012  on deforestation in Mexico. CLR is  a fungal disease that negatively affects coffee production. We exploit the gradual diffusion of the epidemic and estimate a difference-in-difference model. We find that deforestation increased by 32% in CLR-affected municipalities but find no increase in agricultural land. Effects are driven by  municipalities with low coffee yields\, characterizing shade coffee systems\, and states where rustic coffee systems were predominant. These results suggest that deforestation occurred within coffee cultivation areas and emphasize the concurrent role of the PROCAFE program\, launched in 2014\, that promoted the replacement of traditional coffee trees by CLR-resistant hybrids.We study the dynamic effects of CLR and exploit the delayed launch of PROCAFE  to try to disentangle the impact of the epidemic from that of the policy response. Une analyse de la mobilité intergénérationnelle en France\n  \nAbstract \nNous étudions la mobilité intergénérationnelle des revenus en comparant pour la première fois directement la position relative d’un échantillon de jeunes adultes entre 27 et 30 ans à celle de leurs parents\, à partir des données fiscales de l’Échantillon Démographique Permanent. \nLa corrélation entre les rangs des parents et des enfants est de 0.25\, inférieure à celle observée aux Etats-Unis au même âge mais supérieure à celle observée dans les pays nordiques. Les enfants des familles aux plus hauts revenus ont trois fois plus de chances d’être classés parmi les 20 % les plus aisés que ceux issus des familles des 20 % les plus pauvres. Cependant\, pour un même niveau de revenu des parents\, les revenus des enfants varient fortement. En 2019\, le taux de mobilité ascendante du plus bas au plus haut cinquième est de 12 % à l’âge de 29 ans. New Evidence from  Dynamic and Static Panel Approach\n\n  \nAbstract: The literature lacks enough evidence on the effect of environmental policy stringency on renewable energy consumption. Therefore\, the main objective of this study is to investigate the causal effect of the revised version of the Environmental Policy Stringency Index (EPS) and its components on Renewable Energy Consumption (REC)\, taking into account environmental innovation\, trade openness\, economic growth and consumer price index. To this end\, we carry out dynamic and static analyses of the yearly data of 32 OECD countries during the period from 1990 to 2019. The two-step system GMM estimator and the forward-orthogonal deviations-GMM technique are used to deal with the potential endogeneity\, serial correlation and cross-sectional dependence in the dynamic regression\, while the Driscoll-Kraay standard errors technique and quantile regression are employed to estimate the static model. Unlike the existing literature\, our results reveal that increasing environmental policy stringency can promote renewable energy. Both market and non-market-based environmental policies and technical support policies show positive effects on green energy use. These results imply that OECD governments can play a vital role in achieving the goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Increasing the stringency of the policies that put a price on pollution (such as energy taxes) raises the cost of polluted energy use\, leading to a shift toward clean energy under the substitution effect. In addition\, increasing the public R&D expenditure on solar and wind energy technologies can reduce renewable energy costs and prices\, thus facilitating its generation and diffusion. \n  \n  \n\n\n*Mahmoud Hassan a rejoint BSE en tant que post-doctorant en économie appliquée à la résilience des territoires.
