There are many concepts of sustainability. Most amount to vague statements of environmentalism or of support for a particular value the proposer wishes to promote. In 1974\, Robert Solow proposed an economic criterion for sustaining a society\, which he called “intergenerational equity”. His maximin criterion maximizes the well-being of the least well-off generation looking forward from the present. Conditions include Hartwick’s rule\, that total net investment at maximin prices be zero. This paper identifies seven salient popular considerations in current discourse on sustainability. The analysis is based on the structural estimation of a model of learning from prices. The estimation yields two empirical measures of uncertainty: uncertainty about option values and strategic uncertainty about competitors’ valuations. The main contribution of the consensus prices is to reduce strategic uncertainty\, especially in the most opaque segments of the options market. This paper estimates the causal effect of access to the railroad network on intergenerational mobility in nineteenth-century England and Wales. By linking individuals across the five full-population censuses from 1851 to 1911\, and geolocating addresses\, we determine how proximity to the nearest train station affected the occupation mobility between fathers and sons. We address the endogeneity in proximity to train stations by leveraging the as-good-as-random opening of built and planned train stations. We find that sons who grew up approximately 5 km closer to a train station were 2% more likely to work in a different occupation than their father and 6% more likely to be upwardly mobile. In existing data\, we show that exogenously induced transitory changes in labor supply increase supply in subsequent days – indicating that the inter-temporal labor supply elasticity can actually be positive\, rather than negative. To further examine this phenomenon\, we undertake a field experiment with casual urban stand workers in Chennai\, India\, where appearance at the stand in the morning provides a revealed preference measure of labor supply. We randomly provide some workers incentives for attendance over 2 months (phase 1)\, and examine persistence after incentives are removed for another 2 months (phase 2). We find that a 23% increase in labor supply in phase 1 generates a persistent 16% increase in supply in phase 2 – leading to a 22% increase in employment found at the stand. These findings have relevance for understanding the reasons for irregular work attendance and high worker turnover in formal firms\, which impede the transition to formal work in this setting. They also suggest that the effects of unemployment spells may go beyond income loss: unemployment itself can lower a worker’s productivity – offering a potential justification for the « unemployment scar » phenomenon documented in the labor literature\, where employers prefer not to hire workers out of unemployment. We extend the Coelli et al. (2007) pollution cost approach preserving the materials balance condition by considering that peers are evaluated\, besides their energy use\, on their carbon intensity per total energy consumption. The proposed methodology is applied to estimate the extent to which a selection of 33 OECD and BRICS countries can reduce their CO2 emissions given their Gross Domestic Product and population over the period 2001-2019.
