Recalling having lived through prior disinflations has pronounced effects on how long-lived people expect the current inflation episode to be. Information treatments though games in which people experience with prior disinflationary episodes similarly strongly reduce inflation expectations of individuals on average and are often recalled as inflation memories months later. We also show that when people forecast inflation in the lab\, the inflation dynamics in the game can affect their beliefs much like the inflation experienced in real life. The values and norms held by individuals and shared among groups of individuals can have far-reaching consequences on economic and political development. Some of the values contemporaneously held by people across the globe are regularly collected by surveys such as the World Values Survey. Although it is often maintained that values and norms are largely time-invariant\, empirical evidence supporting that claim has been virtually non-existent as a dataset containing historically prevalent values and norms has been lacking.  \nThis article introduces such a dataset\, the Historical Values Survey (HistoVaS). Since we are interested in the potential relevance of values and norms for economic and political development\, the focus is on variables that have been shown to affect development. These include norms of cooperation\, altruism\, work ethic\, entrepreneurship\, tolerance and the relationship to authority. Norms of cooperation and altruism influence how people interact with each other\, work ethic norms are expected to (co-)determine productivity levels whereas norms encouraging entrepreneurship are likely to affect innovation rates and technological progress. We also report norms on how to cope with authority as norms favoring obedience to authorities are expected to be associated with more despotic political regimes.  \nThe HistoVaS introduced in this article uses folktales as its source of information. Folktales have been an important tool for transmitting values and norms across generations. This makes them ideal candidates for inferring historically valid values 2  \nand norms across the world. To produce the HistoVaS\, we have relied on some 16\,000 folktales from 136 countries. These countries represent approximately 95 percent of the world population. Combined with a survey instrument containing 76 variables\, the folktales were fed to GPT\, which produced replies for each folktale separately. The HistoVaS database is based on such replies.  \nTo illustrate the potential usefulness of the HistoVaS\, we associate data on historical values with contemporaneous ones and document a remarkable degree of time-invariance. Interpreting HistoVaS variables as a proxy for culture\, we ask whether they help in explaining contemporaneous per capita income differences across countries. In this paper\, we argue that engagement with communities in online collaboration platforms also contributes to firms’ performance. First\, the ability to reuse knowledge and elicit contributions from external audiences accelerates product development. Second\, the engagement with online communities provides credible information about the firms’ technological and market potential at a stage where they lack track record\, mitigating information asymmetries and supporting the acquisition of valuable connections with external partners. We test our hypotheses on firms that use GitHub\, one of the largest digital platforms for collaboration in software development. We find that firms that reuse more code and elicit more collaboration reach public-facing milestones faster. Unintended effects of targeted LPG subsidies in Peru”\n  \nAbstract: Gas stoves are promoted as clean cooking technologies in developing countries despite the fact that they emit pollutants which are hazardous\, in particular for children. I study a nationwide gas stove program which aims to convert Peruvian households from wood-fuel cooking to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cooking. Using 16 waves of Peru’s Demographic and Health Survey\, I show that infant mortality increases by 15% on average as a result of the intervention. Subsidizing LPG also causes a higher incidence of symptoms of acute respiratory infections in under-5 children and of moderate or severe anemia among adult women.
