Indeed\, the experimental literature shows that contestants almost systematically invest more effort in the contest than predicted by the Nash equilibrium. One possible explanation is that there are evolutionary forces that induce people to beat the others\, resulting in overbidding compared to the Nash prediction. However\, testing the predictions of evolutionary game theory requires a very long-time horizon\, which is very difficult to implement in the lab. Therefore\, we propose an experimental design that — we believe — can help us to understand if evolutionary forces impact participants’ decisions. To do so\, we start from the « evolutionary » vision in which an equilibrium is evolutionary stable if the introduction of a new strategy (called mutant strategy) into a finite population does not change the equilibrium of the game. Thus\, we expose participants of a traditional two-player contest experiment to mutant\, i.e. some of them  have their decision dictated by the experimenter. Observing the reaction of participants to the invasion of « mutants » allows us to understand how evolutionary forces influence the decision-making process of individuals. Our results — prudently —  point that the concept of evolutionary stable strategy is not a potential justification for the fact that subjects in a two-player contest experiment tend to invest too much effort in the contest\, compared to the Nash equilibrium prediction. L’espoir demeure cependant une émotion peu mobilisée par les économistes\, aucun concept ne correspondant à la définition consensuelle que l’on trouve en psychologie. En s’appuyant sur des notions comme les attentes\, les aspirations\, l’optimisme\, les anticipations ou même la confiance\, l’économie comportementale fournit les premiers jalons (certes insuffisants) d’une théorie économique de l’espoir. En nous reposant sur la théorie psychologique de Richard Snyder\, et en la comparant à l’approche transactionnelle de John Dewey\, nous montrons que l’espoir peut être perçu comme un mode de conduite capable de produire une transformation des comportements individuels. We use the introduction of direct airlines connections between Chinese localities and international countries as an exogenous source of change in face-to-face interactions over the period 1992-2019. Our difference-in-difference results show the introduction of a direct weekly flight between a Chinese province and an international country raises trade by 5%. The impact is consistently more pronounced in the 1990s\, where other nonpersonal means of information transmission was less developed and for products with higher face-to-face communication requirements. La responsabilité sociétale des entreprises (RSE)\, formalisée par les critères environnementaux\, sociaux et de gouvernance (ESG) exige des entreprises qui s’engagent dans une telle démarche de divulguer des informations qui peuvent s’avérer utiles pour les investisseurs lors des choix de leur investissement. Pour beaucoup d’entreprises le choix de s’impliquer dans une démarche RSE s’impose à elles à cause d’une prise de conscience de plus en plus grande de ces enjeux liés à la RSE par les parties prenantes (clients\, fournisseurs\, investisseurs…). Un plus grand engagement RSE des entreprises qui va de pair avec une plus grande divulgation d’information par ces entreprises permet-il de réduire le problème d’asymétrie d’information ? Plus concrètement\, dans le cadre de leur relation avec les entreprises qu’ils financent\, les bailleurs de fonds et les institutions en lien avec le financement des entreprises prennent-ils en considération l’engagement RSE de ces dernières et si c’est le cas de quelle façon ? En d’autres termes\, les bailleurs de fonds incitent-ils les entreprises à s’engager davantage dans une démarche RSE en réduisant le coût de financement des entreprises les plus performantes selon les critères ESG ? DESCRIPTION:Séminaire organisé par le GPR HOPE  et le programme 3 – BSE \n  \n\nRémi Baziller\nUniversité Paris 1 \n\n  \nMinimum Wage Shocks\, Firms and Employment: Evidence from Africa\nAlthough African countries are increasingly using minimum wage policies to fight poverty\, research on minimum wages in Africa remains scarce. This paper addresses this gap by examining the economic impact of minimum wage shocks on firms across the African continent\, using firm-level data from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys. We discuss different minimum wage systems and document a simple fact: all but 4 African countries have some form of minimum wage. We document the evolution of minimum wages and identify different minimum wage shocks\, defined as a +30% increase in the minimum wage in constant prices. Over the period 2002-202\, we identify 14 shocks in 12 countries. We then propose a difference-in-differences approach to identify the causal effects of minimum wage shocks on labour costs per worker\, employment\, sales and labour productivity. To deal with the potential endogeneity of minimum wage shocks\, we also propose an IV strategy using the intensity of social protests as an instrument. We find that minimum wage shocks have a significant impact on labour costs per worker\, indicating at least some enforcement of minimum wage regulations. However\, we do not find robust effects on employment. Such an increase in labour costs appears to be offset to some extent by an increase in sales or labour productivity. The effects are much stronger for panel firms that are positively selected\, suggesting a potential cleansing effect of minimum wages. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nAngelino Viceisza\nMIT & Spelman College\n \n \nFintech\, Visual Attention\, and Financial Inclusion: A Field Experiment on Migrant Remittances\nWith Eduardo Nakasone (Michigan State University) and Máximo Torero (Food and Agriculture Organization/FAO)\n\nAbstract: Migrant remittances to low- and middle-income countries were close to 650 billion US dollars in 2022\, impacting about one billion people worldwide. Despite this\, sending remittances remains relatively costly. Policymakers have argued that fintech\, specifically\, comparison websites like kayak.com but for sending money\, can boost financial inclusion and reduce remittance prices. Yet\, little is known about how a key segment of consumers — migrants with limited (financial) education and trust in digital methods — interacts with fintech. We collaborate with a World Bank certified comparison website to conduct a field experiment among Central American migrants. We vary remittance-company attributes shown to migrants on a comparison website\, specifically\, the time to delivery and customer reviews\, to assess the potential for fintech to impact their choices. We use visual attention data to assess the information-processing mechanisms that lead to such choices. Our findings are as follows. First\, migrants are more likely to « experiment » with companies when shown prior customer reviews than delivery speed. Second\, they respond to information as expected by choosing companies that are better reviewed and faster. Third\, we cannot rule out that  experimentation is welfare-reducing: those with a preference for lower fees (or faster companies) end up choosing pricier (or slower) companies when shown more information. Finally\, these effects are more pronounced for migrants with low financial literacy and no prior awareness of fintech. Climate shocks\, insurance demand & wellbeing »\n  \nNatural hazards are becoming more frequent and more intense\, presenting new challenges for climate insurances. Existing evidence tends to focus on experimental studies or the short-run impact of actual disasters. We utilize original survey data on a sample of Swedish forest owners interviewed three years after Gudrun\, the ‘storm of the century’\, which caused extensive damages to Southern Swedish forest in January 2005. We first document the timing of insurance take-up in response to hurricane occurrence over fifty years\, then focus on the middle/long run response to Gudrun. We exploit the quasi-random spatial nature of the shock while conditioning on forest types obtained from remote-sensed data. Our empirical analysis shows evidence of a persistence effect of actual damages on insurance demand. It is consistent with a long-term impact on subjective well-being\, which may be due to capital destruction\, non-pecuniary losses and fear. Dornschneider-Elkink\, Sarah Parlane\, Thomas Sattler \n  \nAbstract: This paper provides a theoretical understanding of political engagement which rests upon a rational choice theory. Citizens can participate in a referendum over two options which are horizontally differentiated on a policy space. The citizens are risk averse and imperfectly informed about the exact political implications associated with each option presented to them. Each has an ideal point on the policy space capturing their intrinsic political preference. During a campaign\, a signal that is non-negatively correlated with each option’s true political implications becomes freely available. We capture political disengagement as a voluntary decision to ignore the information that will be released during the campaign. By opposition\, engaged citizens follow the campaign and learn the signal. We show that disengagement on behalf of all citizens arises in equilibrium if the outcome of the referendum does not depend on the signal. When the outcome of the referendum depends on the signal that is revealed\, two equilibria can arise. When the uncertainty surrounding both options is relatively similar\, all citizens engage. When one option is relatively more uncertain than the other some individuals\, characterized by extreme political ideologies\, decide to disengage as they accurately anticipate that\, should their preferred option be the outcome of the vote\, its political implications will not be as extreme as they would like them to be. DESCRIPTION: \nSéminaire BSE – programme 3\n  \nPedro Vicente\nNovafrica (Lisbonne) \n  \nCountering Violence and Islamic Radicalization amid an Armed Insurgency\nAbstract: Islamic radicalization is one of the main correlates of violent conflict in the world today with important implications in Sub-Saharan Africa. We ask whether Islamic radicalization and related violence can be countered through campaigning by local religious organizations. We follow a campaign against violence in the province of Cabo Delgado\, Mozambique\, a setting that has seen a recent violent insurgency. The campaign focused on the key message that religion is not violent. It was broadcasted through community radios and individual voice messages sent to cell phones. We measure the impact of the campaign on violent events\, various behavioral measures including anti-social behavior and trust\, as well as survey attitudes. We find that the campaign decreased the incidence of violent events in the province. In addition\, although it decreased radical attitudes\, it also increased fear.
