Aujourd’hui\, au fur et à mesure que le climat se réchauffe\, les impacts affectent le fonctionnement des activités économiques et s’accompagnent de dommages de plus en plus couteux. \nAlors\, plusieurs questions émergent : pour éviter de subir une situation imprévisible\, n’est-il pas temps d’agir à la racine\, de minimiser voire de maîtriser nos impacts sur le climat en transformant de manière radicale nos économies ? \nChanger le climat ou changer l’économie ? Food regime theory describes the role of international trade and the interactions between agriculture and industry in food production and distribution. This chapter uses multi-regional input-output analysis and network analysis to identify the position of each economy within the network of land and value added embedded into international trade. Network analysis allows us to characterize each country’s central or peripheral position within the network\, as well as the trading communities within the network. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire programme 3 – BxSE\n  \nAndrea di Benedetto\n\n Utrecht University\n\n \nIntegrating public opinion and political dynamics into (agent-based) integrated assessment modelling\n \nAbstract\nState-of-the-art Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) often overlook the political constraints that shape climate-policy implementation. Although these models evaluate mitigation pathways\, they rarely account for whether policies can be introduced\, maintained\, or reversed under pressure from public opinion and vested industry interests. In this paper\, we integrate political dynamics into the Dystopian Schumpeter-Keynes (DSK) model by combining the election model of Di Benedetto et al. (2025) with the opinion-dynamics approach of Lackner et al. (2024). The resulting framework links public opinion\, electoral outcomes\, climate-policy implementation\, and economic feedbacks. Households form political preferences in response to economic conditions\, perceived climate change\, lobbying pressure\, and social interactions\, and vote every four model years for either a Green party\, which supports climate policy\, or a Brown party\, which does not. We compare climate-policy packages across different socio-political settings and assess their robustness to backlash and lobbying resistance. DESCRIPTION:Séminaire d’économie de Bordeaux\n  \nMurat Kirdar\nKoc University\, Istanbul \n \nHow Firms Reorganize Around Informal Labor: Evidence from Turkey’s Refugee Inflow\n \n \nAbstract: We show that large-scale refugee inflows can raise rather than depress the wages of formally employed natives\, through within-firm reorganization that is specific to economies with substantial informal sectors. Using the arrival of nearly 4 million Syrian refugees in Turkey as a natural experiment\, and linking matched employer–employee administrative data to firm balance sheets\, we establish three findings. First\, formally employed native men shift toward cognitive-intensive tasks and earn higher wages within continuing employment relationships; person–firm fixed effects confirm that these gains reflect genuine increases in workers’ marginal products rather than compositional shifts. Second\, firms reorganize internally: capital per unit of sales falls significantly despite substantial output growth—ruling out automation\, demand-driven expansion\, and outsourcing—while intermediate input shares remain flat. Effects concentrate in historically high-informality sectors and in firms with greater pre-shock manual task intensity. Together with the worker-level patterns\, these results identify the operative channel: Syrian refugees\, working almost entirely informally\, provide low-cost manual labor that substitutes for physical capital and enables firms to reassign formal workers toward higher-value cognitive activities. Third\, Olley–Pakes and Melitz–Polanec decompositions of firm-level wages show that aggregate wage growth in exposed regions reflects broad-based within-firm gains rather than reallocation of workers toward higher-paying firms.
