Is corporate science declining in Europe? New evidence based on large European R&D-intensive companies

Abstract : Previous research has noted a decline in publishing activity among large R&D-intensive U.S. companies up until the late 2000s. In this paper, we shift the focus to large R&D- intensive European firms, analyzing a more recent period from 2007 to 2022. Using firm- level financial data matched with publication records, we find that the research output of these firms, measured by the quantity and quality of scientific articles, has increased over time. However, this growth is primarily driven by increased collaboration between firms and universities. We conclude by discussing the policy implications of these findings.
