University of Bordeaux – Pôle juridique et judiciaire
35 place Pey Berland, 33000 Bordeaux, France (map)

Contact: Nicolas Carayol (nicolas.carayol@u-bordeaux.fr)

Bordeaux, a city renowned for many good things: listed as « UNESCO World Heritage Site », described as « an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble”, classified as « City of Art and History” and last but not least, the wine capital of the world! More on Bordeaux
The Pey-Berland site of the University of Bordeaux dates from the late nineteenth century and it is located in the heart of Bordeaux, next to the Cathedral St André. It was the historic site of the faculties of law, political science, economics and management, and it is nowadays dedicated to hosting major events in all disciplines. It stills hosts the “Pôle juridique et judiciaire”  (PJJ). Its unique position makes it also an ideal point of departure for visiting Bordeaux downtown and numerous historical sites.

We aim to attract contributions from both junior and senior scholars; a minimum number of slots are reserved for junior researchers (PhD students or postdoc scholars who obtained their PhD in 2016 or later).

Up to 18 papers will be selected from open submissions on the basis of peer review.

The workshop aims at including papers form various streams of research developed in recent years in and around the area of public and private scientific research. Contributions are invited on (but not limited to) one or more of the following topics:

  • The evaluation of science policy
  • Organising research activities in universities, PROs and private R&D labs
  • Spillovers from scientific research
  • Role of gender and family in scientific research
  • Science research networks and collaboration
  • Scientific careers and mobility

Submission of fullpapers or extended abstracts of unpublished work are welcomed. All submitted papers will be selected by the scientific committe (no reviews will be provided though).  Submissions are managed via the Easychair system, via the following link: Submissions

Three Special Sessions:

  • Session 1: Research Excellence Policy Initiatives: Does it Work?
  • Session 2: New Challenges in the Funding of Science
  • Session 3: Improving the Social Impact of Science and Optimizing Technology Transfer

Those sessions aim to bring together scientific experts in the field altogether with science policy makers and practitioners. The idea behind organizing those sessions is to emulate a discussion between policy makers and experts in science policy evaluation and design. The special sessions will confront feedback experiences on science policy making launched in different countries with evidence from their assessment relying on up-to-date scientific methods. Policy makers and practitioners will find evidences, new methods and a chance to highlight new directions of research. Scholars will have the opportunity to benefit from feed-back from real world actors. In each session, three scientific experts will first make short presentations. Next two policy makers will speak from their experience and to what has been presented, and then a debate should take place in the panel and with the audience.

The sessions are intended for researchers in the field, policy makers and practitioners. Policy makers and practitioners will find evidences, new methods and a chance to sponsor new directions of research. Scholars will have the opportunity to benefit from feed-back from real world actors and new ideas. The ultimate goal of the three afternoon special sessions is to contribute to robust science policy design, thanks to scientific evaluations of programs and policies ran in different countries and addressing sound policy issues shared by stakeholders.
