Deliver Us from Crime? Online Platforms, Gig Jobs, and Offending
avec Hugo Allouard, Grazia Cecere, Olivier Marie, and Ines Picard
Abstract: We study how the rollout of food-delivery platforms across French cities affects local labour markets and crime. Platform entry increases the number of registered riders and offers new employment opportunities for low-skilled workers, especially youth and migrants. Exploiting a staggered difference-in-differences design, we also observe significant crime declines in cities where these platforms operate, with the largest drops in violent offences, petty theft, property damage, and drug crimes. The evidence shows that gig platforms can broaden access to legal work for marginalised groups and curb economically motivated offending.
