ABSTRACT: We investigate the scientific and inventive careers of foreign STEM doctoral graduates of Dutch universities, relative to their native peers. In order to do so, we first undertake an ambitious data linkage effort between three different bibliographical databases (doctoral thesis, scientific publications, and patents). Based on this, we estimate the relative probability of foreign graduates to publish and/or patent in the years following their graduation and where (the Netherlands, their country of origin, or elsewhere), after controlling, among others, for their gender, graduation cohort and supervisors’ productivity. We are presently engaged in the data building effort and will produce soon the firs exploratory regressions.
